Diorama ~《School Front, Exterior》

This work was based off the setting of 'School' found within the Matilda the Musical. I wanted to create a physical representation of the society and home of the education foundation. By following the theme of 'School' I aim to highlight the innocence and sense of potential associated with the ideologies of School.

By using an abundance of differently coloured card paper and soft/delicate materials that of which would be found in a School setting for younger patrons, I hoped to create a double entendre. Showing both a physical school while using materials that would be found within an art classroom. This kind of art would be suitable and aimed at a younger audience due to the bright flashy colours and child-like setting reminiscent of a play-house.

My diorama does contain loose objects which could become a trip hazard if they fall out beside the box onto the floor - so for everyone's safety it would be best if it weren't moved around constantly. However if I wanted to and had access to a hot glue gun I could fix this issue by securing those assets to the diorama itself.

I feel by conducting, the experiment in the 3D aspect I performed this quite well. I had a vision for what I wanted to create and it came out almost as I had exactly imagined it would have. So I am very pleased with the outcome of this process.

The illustration project we have currently been assigned is centred around the worldwide phenomenon of Matilda the Musical. With the theme in mind we have been assigned the task of creating backing visuals for a theatre performance of said musical.

My journey begins with researching and collecting a myriad of images synonymous with the idea and presentation of Matilda, in particular the setting - 'school' to be exact. Whilst looking at how different artists portray and explore the theme of 'school' this should give me the push I need to decide where I should begin my development of ideas.

Then I will move onto my experimentation side of the project including different ideas and techniques for me to self evaluate to see where I am strong and where I can improve. Once I have identified my strongest suites, I can fuse my best works into one big vison for my final piece.

Here is the final development of my vison, I used the text from the Matilda extract for my background text within the pages of the book, while using a brown and yellowish paint to give the pages an older more rustic colour/feeling. For the hand, I used pencil to give depth and shadows, as well as fine liner to outline the border of my hand. The text was done with a variation of pencil, fine liner, and marker depending on it's location and size. For example the song title "When I grow up." was written in fine liner. Much like I hypothesised - the proportions did not stay consistent with my plan, the pages were bigger and I believe the hand also got bigger and perhaps shifted to one side a little more.

I hope to influence my audience by conveying a feeling of uproar or inspiration in my image, I believe that this would be most effective with an older teen/ young adult audience, but I wouldn't lock other audiences out of this feeling , because it's never to late to find some inspiration in the world.

I decided to go cartoony with this pieces style because in media like cartoons and comics , the nuisance child or children are typically seen throwing objects in school like a paper aeroplane.

My thought process and construction of what I wanted to convey about 'imagination' and 'potential,' because children are full of potential and their minds are so open and expansive. With how this piece is expected to turn out I want to explore the possibilities of what children would and want to be in their futures - through the power of their minds. The human mind is a powerful construct especially in it's youth without the stress and ills of an older mentality.

Below are some instances of monoprinting I have conducted with the theme of Matilda and the idea of 'school' and 'children' in mind. This process was only conducted with black ink which I do believe is a small disappointment, if more coloured inks were available I would've liked to experimented with reds and blues. Although, I am quite pleased with the experimentation I conducted with different utensils to make the ink imprint on the page much like: pencils, pens, oil pastels, etc. In addition, to this I decided to try different styles between my two monoprints, one seemingly more lifelike (Tricycle) while the other is more cartoonish (Paper Plane.) However, my more cartoonish piece was done all in one line.

However with this experiment I have to keep in mind the health and safety precautions whilst and before conducting my illustrations. Such as PPE like an apron so my clothes don't get smothered in ink or Tucking in my lanyard/ my hair otherwise it could get in the way or even worse get covered in ink. Obviously there are others that take into consideration safety as a priority like storing belongings under desks.

I feel one of my strengths with this visual would have to be the shading, although it was difficult to do finer details on images that small - the shading came out better than I expected compared to the last time I did monoprinting in secondary school. If I want to improve on finer details, I would have to scale my image size up to give me the room needed to improve.

I went with the direction of using coloured pencils to emphasize the child-like basis of the art. Considering some of the earliest artist materials made available to children growing up is in fact coloured pencils. I used the typical 'Lightbulb Moment' mostly seen in kids media and cartoons to reinforce this aspect of youth and exploration. With the lightbulb bursting opening with the many aspirations and ideas of the young girl below, surrounding her head are the potential careers she could pursue with these aspirations in mind. I wanted to use the splash of colour behind Matilda to showcase the explosion in her mind, with these potential lives she could live in future filling her with many different emotions like fear and excitement which I hoped to portray through the brightly coloured backdrop.

This was probably my most time consuming project, taking round about three days to get done, mostly due to the time taken to construct a new backdrop entirely as I was recommended a new technique half way through that I thought would make my work more expressive.

However, once again I would need to evaluate my safety precautions for this piece of art, as I used a spray gun to effectively distribute my background colours like a splash. If used incorrectly these guns can be quite dangerous. For example I could get sick if the high pressured aim was shot into my bloodstream so to counter this I would have to keep the barrel of the gun away from me at all times. In addition to that, I could wear PPE like gloves and goggles to protect myself from high speed free flying paint.

Influenced by my planning prior, I decided to go for more of a rebellious/ graffiti theme to suit the song of "Revolting children" Throughout my future experiments I should continue to toy about with new ideas when it comes to text.

By using brightly coloured text I'd hoped to relate to a younger audience by making my text pop! Now I do believe that Demi Overton does majority if not all of her artwork free handed so I would be adding my own creative twist by follow a hand made stencil if you will, if that is the case regarding Demi's creative process. To develop this I will have to add the shading and finer details by doing an abundance of tiny holes in close proximity, maybe ranging in size depending on if and where the pencil my have blemishes' in its design. This would go on to be quite the long and pain staking process.

Above I have included two instances of Demi's previous works. Grand Canyon and Through the Trees respectively. I have chosen these two works in particular because they showcase how Demi best constructs a visual, with different materials, colours and patterns. Not all of her work is conducted in the same style regardless of her unique craft. As we can blatantly see, in the piece on the left Demi utilised different sharp objects to create a collection of holes varying in size in her sheet of paper, the differing sizes creates depth of the visual making it more life like and appealing to the audience. Her incisions follow a free flow pattern that seems to have no continuity, yet fits together harmoniously to portray the famed landscape she was envisioning. Whereas, the creation on the right applies colour as an extension of its vision. Capsulating the nature and pastoral imagery. In addition to this, another comparison to make is that each piercing on the background within this Illustration seems to be uniform, all in the same proportion seemingly reaching out in it's appearance like the branches of a tree.

Pencil ~《Water colour》

For the continuation of my Demi Overton styled work I wanted to add some colour, having done this style of work before I utilised water colours over the raised texture of the piercings, the bumps caught some of the water colour leaving a creative sort of dragging effect like the holes were sucking the colour away from the piece of work. Unfortunately, this time around I did not have this effect happen but regardless I kept on with the colour, I think if I had known that the desired effect wouldn't be capable then I would've used less yellow as it kind of makes the other colours seem less significant. I used soft strokes and flicking motions to apply the colour to my work.

With the simple shapes and bright colours, this illustration would have an intended audience of younger persons like children or young teens. The contrast of the yellow against the dark and splattered black at the tip of the pencil really makes an eye catching effect. Especially with the strokes of "graphite" at the top of the page, I think that the illusion of the pencil actually leaving marks on this page had come out better than I had suspected it would and as a result I am very pleased with the product.

Now obviously there is room for improvement, like using different utensils to make the piercings to make different sized or perhaps shaped holes to experiment with tone and texture.

Final idea ~《Planning》

A visual mapping of where my ideas surround the topic of a final idea are currently at. I want to include the aspects of some of my previous pieces into a whole project whilst including new and exciting ideas. For example, I wanted to used the performance based art since I believe it was a strong start to the project whilst also including the 3D element of my diorama project considering it was executed so well and I am still very proud of the outcome. Keeping that in mind, I decided to add an indication of what materials I could use at my disposal when making a project that included both so I settled on remaking my performance based art as a 3D model. Originally, I toyed with the idea of using clay, wire as seen on the sheet above, but ultimately I found another route that was both effective for my time and more detailed.

In addition I decided on a target audience, then moved onto annotating a small sketch of the hand and book separate to show my initial ideas of what could be done to make these models as productive as possible.

Hand Cast ~ 《Process》

So moving onwards to creating my final piece, the model hand was shifted from being made from clay and/or wire to being made from a casting material. This process was extremely interesting to conduct, I got to watch as my hand was completely normal to being engulfed in a thick oat-meal like gloop, to being right in front of me physically almost a little disorientating. My first step was to roll up my sleeves, make sure all my jewellery and bracelets were removed as a form of health and safety so nothing got stuck or broke the mould made around my hand.

After that, we mixed up some alginate and cold water, specifically cold water so it would set slower and give us time to make a strong and detailed mould. I say "We" because I had to have assistance with the process, because obviously I was unable to use one of my hands so I would be half as productive if compared to my regular self. Alginate was dolloped over my hand in a thick and vast quantity and we had to keep quiet the collection of alginate over my hand so the mould would be thick and stronger against breaking apart or leaving any holes for our casting mix to fall out of.

Once settled, the alginate had a silicone like texture, we strengthened it by wrapping mod rock around its surface area, this time with warm water so the mod rock would set faster. No it was a waiting game as once it had finally set I could remove my hand carefully from the contraption so the Scola-cast mixture could be poured down it. Then it was a waiting game of around 24 hours for it to settle enough to remove from the cast.

Once it could be removed this is what the final product of my hand cast looked like, to be displayed in front of my book, unfortunately the pointer finger snapped off alas that was quickly resolved with drilling a small entry hole for some wire to funnel through the hand into the finger. Then removing some excess alginate left between my enclosed fingers, that took quite a while to do since I had to be delicate as to not further damage the hand. Finally, the arm was sanded down so it could sit comfortably upright.

I am incredibly satisfied with the product of the hand cast, even if it had broken at the index finger and I lost some of the finger tips due to so trapped air in the cast. The texture is super smooth and life like, and the fine lines of detail like the creases is so pleasing to the eyes. Even with it's flaws I am pleased with the result and would be up for doing the process again perhaps with another finger pose or perhaps even another part of my body.

Book Background ~ 《Process》

On the other hand, whilst I was waiting for my cast to be settle and/or start production on it. I was making the physical book for my hand to stand proudly behind the hand cast. Unfortunately, the book cannot yet stand on it's own. Perhaps I'll have to create a stand for it to sit on but so far it is coming along pretty well.

I started by dying the pages with tea much like I was supposed to before, but I wasn't aware that we had tea bags. So therefore, I am improving my old designs by doing as I originally intended before I had to compromise - I did four water colour pages in A3 format and allowed them a day to dry in the sun. While it was drying I began working on the book cover and casing. I used a purple casing, with a gold border all created from scraps of coloured card paper, gluing and stapling them in format that resembles an enlarged book. Once, that was over I designed the front cover taking inspiration from the image below. Cutting out the letter for "Roald Dahl" and "Matilda" From scraps of coloured paper I had used back in the 3D diorama with a tiny illustrated Matilda to top it all off. The book presents warm and bright tones with the colour palette I have selected.

Back to the innards of the book once the pages were dry and secured, the texture was very crispy and crinkly to the touch which made the aged idea feel more authentic. I decided to use the same extract back from my performance based art to pay homage to the original as it was an extract from the Matilda book itself. I followed a line guide to make sure my text was uniform in size and position. I tried to imitate Quentin Blake's style with my line, to pay respect to his original portrayal of the little hero and Quentin's style itself since it's so unique.

Some things to take into consideration would be the health and safety of the whole process as I was using a lot of sharp objects to make the book. Like scissors and a guillotine, if used improperly it could cause harm to myself to combat this potential hazard I had to be extremely careful with how I cut and trimmed my work apart. As well as, the tea. Ads it was drying, it dripped onto the floor, if it so happens someone could walk over that and slip, causing damage to themselves and possibly others. Therefore, I have to put my work aside away from people to dry and clean up any excess drip age.

Pencil ~《Light Work》

In further development of my Demi Overton styled work, I took advantage of the punctures created to allow light to penetrate through my work to give the implication of a "bright idea." With the alterations made to the paper with the pin the light shining against would flow through the holes and reflect off the camera lens this is particularly noticeable in the tip of the pencil. The variation of holes assimilated would create depth to my image giving it a rough looking line work. Like this was scratched into paper almost of out frustration (Well not far off with how long it took to produce.) Unfortunately there was so residue paint stuck to the back of my paper which showed up due to the light shining against the back of the page. That I am pretty annoyed with as I feel ot ruins the image by being distracting, mostly because it's in the centre of the shaft of the pencil.

The light becoming more prominent in areas of excessive holes is quite the effective illusion of shades and tone. This worked out pretty well in my favour which was a nice happy middle considering I was torn up about the mistaken paint on the backside of the paper. I really enjoy how the markings created by the tip start out thick then progress into a more sparse and diffused orientation.

Perhaps next time if I performed this process again, I would like to spend more time if possible on my image to add more detail and holes. Much like I said in the previous inclusion of the Demi Overton work I would like to experiment with new and various utensils.

Hand Cast ~《Painted and Propped》

After much hardship getting the hand to stand upright I devised a way to stand the hand up with enough support so that it shouldn't tip over. To begin with how we transformed from the model to this, I started out with the painting which entirely did not go according to plan, paint was available in limited supply in only a select few colours, I mostly used a mixture of white, pink, yellow and green to detail my piece. It took a few layers to stick to the hand, but eventually I had that issue sorted. Unfortunately, my problem free moment would only be short lived, because Once the paint had dried I needed a stand to hold the hand upright as now the added weight of the paint had it falling over more so than it was before.

In the workshop I selected a circular wooden base with a hole in the centre, a sort of wheel shape if you will. I attempted to hot glue the hand to the base, but it didn't stick as I had hoped. So I tried again.. again.. and once more. After the third or so attempts that had let me down and I had to scrap the glue off my base I knew that this idea wouldn't work, so I had a brain wave - with the hole through the centre of my base, I could cut a wooden pole down to size, drill in the arm of my hand and slot the pole through the hole of the base and the hand.

Using a saw I trimmed the wooden stick I had selected down to the correct length, just enough to hold the hand and base together. I had assistance drilling the hole. Now obviously, when it come to equipment like saws and drills there is a lot of precaution to take in my actions, one wrong move could cause devastation. So I had to keep in mind that my area was clear of trip/slip hazards. No water was near any sockets that where in use and fingers were away from operational ends of devices/equipment.

In this image above you can see a wire frame, this is what the tie will slot over in the final piece. I had forgotten the tie on the day this was taken.

Only some splashes of colour and a red footer to the backside of the cover which I had forgotten in the slide above. The colour was applied by flicking a paint brush at the page in various angles, forces and orientations. I had to cut a border out of a spare sheet of paper so paint didn't get over my illustration or the text on the front page.

For extra detail, I added some designs to the other pages present within the book, here I will explain what some of these pages contain. Now like I had mentioned before my illustrations were paying tribute to Quentin Blake's style in the original book. For example, the page before the extra you can find a headshot of Miss Trunchbull, but this headshot has been graffitied over by one of the rebellious students, crossing out letters in her name and striking over them with new ones to create a new name for the horrid woman. "HunchbACK" as well as drawing crude facial features to her, making her resemble the devil.

Or the two pages of student gossip, One about the girl in the extract who talks about grasshoppers and one about the incident in Matilda where the little girl is thrown over the gate. I wanted to show student opinions and student voices by exploring what they would say and think about certain topics in their school.

Finally my last page, tries to continue the extract from the book, but cuts off. Presumably the student who was writing it go tired and wanted to do their own thing (Totally not meta.) Exclaiming that "No more riting. Only revolting."

And at the end of it all, The final collaboration of my ideas. All into one singular piece of artwork. It took about a week and a half maybe 2 weeks, I can't exactly remember. I compromised and decided not to make a stand for the book considering how much trouble the hand gave me and how much time it set me back by. With, the whole day of casting and the issues with getting it to secure with the stand. So the illustrated background can be held up by clips as seen above. To be honest, I think it better suits the theme considering it's school supplies. I am overall, very satisfied with how the product looks, apart from the painting on the hand, if i had the shades I need perhaps I could have improved how desaturated the hand looks, it gives off a very cold and dead tone which is something we don't want for this particular theme. Although I am slightly dissatisfied with it, the hand had to be my favourite part of the whole process. The casting, the moulding, everything about it was so interesting and exciting! I look forward to more casting projects in the future.

I myself feel that the product is a good representation of the influenced image made at the beginning of the theme. Aside from the obvious proportion changes and changes to the colour. I do feel that this is a worthy reflection of my earlier work. It was almost like bringing my ideas to life. As such I hope to influence my audience by making them feel empowered with the finger pointing up, almost like it's indicating to "keep moving up" or "reach for the stars."

While this project may be complete, the book and hand can still fall over if put off balance so to keep in mind some health and safety if these items are to fall over, they should be propped back up- and in the unfortunate case that the hand falls over and breaks it should be cleaned up with smaller fragments binned with the bigger fragments are saved for reconstruction or a potential new product. Linking back to my original idea behind the inspiration "It's never too late to find inspiration in this world."

Final idea ~《Conclusion》

Looking at the final formation of this work I am incredibly relieved that our theme has come to an end - it was fun while it lasted and was a sweet segue into the college year, but like a year it must come to an end at some point. It was incredibly interesting to see where I could apply myself in this theme to be more productive and where I could identify my strong points. With out theme circulating around the setting of school I could use a lot of my environment in my work, which was crucial for my ideas and initial thoughts. Over the course of this theme, I have tried varying processes and logistics. Experimenting with new ideas and equipment like the casting kit or the laser cutter - which if I do say so was so fascinating to see in person. I was in awe at just how fast the cutting actually was.

There was many illustrations that I found myself content with creating, like the Diorama and my Headshot piece as they were progressively more fun and challenging to conduct allow my to think on my feet, but without the feeling of pressure. Unlike my Final Idea, which although was challenging as I had hoped and preferred - but the added pressure made me fumble and worry more than I should have - However I guess that's just how things go when doing a final piece.

There was works that took a lot of time like my previously mentioned Final Piece and my Demi Overton inspired work, but I find that pretty art isn't easily rushed. Speaking of pretty, I used quite an amount of bright colours in my art for this theme to simulate the wonder and imaginations of a child to correlate with our theme of "Matilda." As, children have potential. Potential, is key for a bright future in whatever aspiration tickles their minds.

Overall, I am very pleased with the theme we were given and how I as a writer and as an artist responded to the theme. If given the opportunity to do this theme again I would take it, especially now that I'm getting more used to college life and know where specific equipment is kept that I know would definitely improve my work. I think some of my art is a little shaken, because I was very nervous with being a new student around new people and my hands/ breathing gets very uneasy in new and unfamiliar environments. Regardless, the theme was fun, and I am excited to see what our next theme is.

Overall, I find myself to be quite proud of the work I have been able to provide for the theme of "Matilda." I must say that this was an excellent starting theme for the college year and as a introduction as to what I can expect from my course. Our theme could be associated with our environment which I think was crucial for the development of some initial ideas, therefore making people feel comfortable and familiar with the illustrations in their plans. I, myself was content with the theme, finding it to be very explorative with boundless opportunity's and routes for me to indulge myself in. Many of which were familiar like I had mentioned and as a result I could find something I was comfortable doing. However next time, I would like to try to improve gej quality of my work. Now that I am aware of what equipment the college has to offer moreso than I was at the beginning of the course - I do feel that some aspects of my work could have improved if I had this knowledge prior to beginning. In addition to this, I would perhaps explore a minimum of two different artists as opposed to just one for more variation (Demi Overton.) Throughout this project, I have learned how to cast items through my hand model. As well as, how to tone a human face with coloured pencils.

Similarly to what I would change next time, I had to adapt some of my projects as I was going along. Such as my final project and my headshot, where my hand wouldn't stick to the baseplate with hot glue, hence I resorted to drilling a hole in the hand to stick a pole through for support - or changing me previous background for one that used a paint spray for a more prominent effect. Furthermore aspects of my projects like the painting, could be improved mainly because our supply of paints/paint colours aren't that great.

My main successes with our theme would have to be getting my hand cast to mostly stay intact whilst nost breaking the mould. Being able to produce a model from my initial idea. Working independently with new equipment. With that, I believe I gave infact responded to the best of my ability to the brief, I have provided what I can in the given period of time. Producing arts of various forms and techniques. Arranging them in this padlet and using my language to give my interpretations, thoughts and analysis. Therefore going into detail about how and why certain processes were conducted in specific manners, keeping in mind our health and safety as well as what is right and morally just to do in my work. Giving credit where it's due.

My time management overall was pretty good, I wouldn't say it was impeccable because some projects delayed me with problems like my hand cast. Something not effect by my time management was my research into the theme and things synonymous with our theme. My research was utilised to develop my initial ideas as it gave me direction and inspiration to work with. I suppose for next time I could research into how my art is intended for specific audiences, as that was something that only became coherent during the construction of my illustrations, dependant on colour, tone and line work.
