A few generations later, when you're out with your friends, all of you will be looking at social media on your phones, not a single word spoken within each other. Many people use social media across the world. By 2020, over 200 billion people are expected to use social media. More than half of the teens in this world use social media each day ranging from the ages of 13 - 17 years old. Children and young adults should not have access to social networking sites because it vandalises mental health, affects education, and nothing is ever safe on social media.

Studies show that social media can be even more addictive than cigarettes and alcohol. Being addicted to sites that can cause a lot of problems, including health of the user, is not going to be harmless in the future. According to AP News, “What distinguishes a mental illness, such as depression, from normal feelings such as sadness, is that mental illnesses cause ongoing stress and severely interfere with a person's ability to function.” (Tanner) This quote explains what mental illness is and how it will affect social media users in the long run. Mental health problems include stress, depression, anxiety, eating and sleeping disorders, relationship problems, and can even lead to suicide. Some studies also show that extensive social media use can leave people thinking negatively about themselves or their image. "Young adults talk about the pressure to post the perfect photo or compete with the pristine lives their peers present on the Internet.” This quote demonstrates that social media can also lead to mental illnesses like depression when teenagers start thinking down on themselves when they compare to a "perfect" life or what seems like one on social media. Overall, there is a lot of evidence suggesting that social media, in many cases, is going to continue to harm the health of many young adults and children who continue to use these sites frequently.

Social media can heavily impact education for teens with the causes of sleep deprivation and distraction. It has become such a big trend to have social media, when it wasn't even intended for youths to start with. It is an addictive habit, when teens struggle with managing their time and aren't responsible enough to do so. A big part in a life of a youth adolescent is social media, but the negative effect of this popular communication system is that it causes them to stay up late at night. This would cause sleep deprivation. Sleep deprivation can cause people to have lower grades on their school work. They could be falling asleep in class with their attention at a mediocre level. Sleep deprivation can make a person forget parts of their learning in school. According to ProCon.org, “Students who used social media while studying scored 20% lower on tests.” This quote illustrates how social media affect grades in school. Students could excel and make a drastic positive change on their test results if they weren’t distracted by social media. The potential of students could be wasted when they are busy using social media instead of studying or doing their homework. This results in less stable knowledge of the information students receive in school, something that is the opposite of what is wanted. According to ProCon.org, “One study found that in schools which introduced a ban in cellphones, student performance improved 6.41%” This quote shows how social media can negatively impact class work, and without it students have a better chance of succeeding in school. Cell phones are the main device where people post on social media. If the electronic most needed for social media, was banned there would be one less attribute that distracts from schoolwork. Social media can affect education, which is a valuable part of a child’s life that should not be damaged from the cause of networking.

Social Media Can Be Dangerous

Social media can be very dangerous and can cause serious problems. Social Media users are vulnerable to security attacks such as hacking, identity theft, and all varieties of viruses. People get hurt through bullying and cyber bullying increasing fights, and suicide. Children endanger themselves by not understanding the public and viral natures of social media. According to ProCon.org, “81% of people surveyed feel 'not very' or 'not at all' secure when using social media sites to share private information.” (Procon). People who use social media still complain and do not feel comfortable about it. Others don't realize it until later on. ACCAP displays, social media is an exposure to harmful or inappropriate content (ACCAP). Social media also lets the whole world have access to your private information, including your address, and all the other things you post online. It also exposures dangerous people, and increases cyberbullying leading to suicide (ACCAP). Many suicide reasons are because of physical body looks, and trying to be the perfect image. Teens compare within each other, trying to be better, forgetting who they really are. The reality is that social media overshares your privacy revealing everything to the whole world. Hackers and anyone really, can view profiles, and even private or deleted content (Procon). Dangerous people with fake identities can also try to find more information or meet up with unsuspecting people. They can eventually trace your footsteps and get to you. Though social media does allow friends and others to see your post, it may not always be avail. Not only does social media reveal your identities, it reveals the identities of your friends, even sometimes causing social problems within each other. Cyberbully increases pressure, leading to suicide and many bad decisions made, like 🤬. People on social media can be dangerous, even threatening (ACCAP). They make you believe things that may not be true and change your true self. People bet with each other, affect one another, and dare each others to do menacing things. To sum it all up, social media is not a safe environment or a private place free of danger.

While there are many benefits of social media such as communicating quickly over long distances, teenagers and children should not use social media. First, extensive use of social media can cause mental and overall health problems that could influence the user's health later on. This is because common long term and long lasting effects from social media include depression, stress, social problems, and mental disorders. Secondly, social media can also negatively impact education and learning. Lastly, social media is not a safe environment to live in. There is evidence that supports this because shown many times, social media is a place that users are vulnerable to problems like identity theft, hacking and viruses. Cyberbullying is also common on these social media sites, and nothing is ever private even though you think it is. These main reasons are why social media should not be used by children and young adults whose minds have not fully developed enough for social media.
