They settled in the Valley of Mexico in around 1250 c.e. When they settled there, they made the city of Tenochtitlan. Tenochtitlan began as the home city of the Aztecs, but later turned into the capitol of their empire. Tenochtitlan alone was larger than Venice, Paris, or London. The city grew because they built many temples for their gods and because of their growing population. Their empire was made up of volunteers which means everybody who was an Aztec chose to be an Aztec. At its highest power, the empire had a population of more than 5 million people. Tenochtitlan was located right next to Lake Texcoco.
