I really like the topic on teaching to the culture for achievement equity for students of color because it resonates with me as I was once a student of color and I am currently a student of color in graduate school. Your stream on culture is well mapped out with a nice flow. I like how you will dive in on cultural awareness , cultural strengths, and sensitivity. I definitely think teacher attitudes towards student of color will bring up much information regarding cultural sensitivity. I can potentially see overlapping between educational needs and academic achievement as they both can go hand and hand. Your Padlet looks great!

Hi Michelle, your Padlet is coming along nicely! Our topics definitely overlap in several areas, and I can see how your topic also touches on Chikyra's pre-k topic! Access to instruction continues to be limited based upon cultural and/or socio-economic factors. With Black Lives Matter having a Week of Action at School, culturally relevant teaching is taking on a more prominent role. From my experience teaching and serving inner-city Philadelphia K-8 students, so many of our students are traumatized and that trauma is often not addressed or is under-addressed. Suspension does not address trauma, and may add to it. It often further alienates students and parents from the school, and deepens the achievement gap. Ignoring aggressive, anti-social behavior of students further traumatizes the student body and stressed school staff. We must reach out to our communities and meaningfully engage our parents, while investing in pre-k, parent supports, culturally-affirming curriculum, and trauma care. You have an awesome topic, and I am looking forward to learning from your research!
