In an effort to help those with no housing, the government created suburbs, which are towns created on the outskirts of cities. Newer jobs were: drive-in movies, restaurants, and shopping malls. With more demand on automobiles the price for the cars went down as well. For example, middle class families could afford two cars instead of just one car. And even more staggering nearing 1960, 45 million homes had a television set. There is no doubt that the television was the most popular form of mass media (media with means of reaching large audiences) in the 1950's, but radio still found a way to keep up with the times. Radio switched from being mostly national, to being mostly local, broadcasting local news, weather, music, and community issues. It's a lot of how radio is today! Movies, though hit a bump in the road when TV came around, bounced back by showcasing their larger screens, their color (until TV's had color in the 60's), and they also piped in smells to coincide with the events on screen, something TV would never be able to do! Then there was music made for their age-group, movies that were starring other teenagers too, and for the first time in history the term "teen-ager" was used. But as the teenagers came into their own, rebelling against their elders, their elders fought back, shutting down the things they saw as "inappropriate". They also placed rules against the teenagers, banning girls from wearing pants, banning rock and roll, and even banning a boys hair touching his ears! The adults disapproved of the teenagers slang, choice of clothing, and even what they listened to. So to help the veterans, the government introduced the GI Bill Of Rights. This bill encouraged veterans to go back to school to get an education, the government would pay for part of this education, it also guaranteed them a year's worth of unemployment. During this time most people shifted from blue collared workers to white collared workers. Conglomerates are when a large corporation makes a smaller company that is unrelated to the original one. Another way they expanded was to make franchises. Though movies had been around for many years, television changed the game. With popular shows like, I Love Lucy (1951-1957), and Gunsmoke (1955-1975), more and more audiences are being entertained at home. But even though TV was the new popular form of entertainment, movies had their fair-share of attention. With movie stars like the young heartthrob, James Dean who starred in many movies throughout the 50's, he starred in movie icons like, Rebel Without a Cause (1955), before his tragic death in 1955. Other timeless stars like Audrey Hepburn started in the 1950's, starring in Roman Holiday  (1953) with Gregory Peck. Marilyn Monroe was a symbol of the 1950's, starring in multiple movies like, Gentleman Prefer Blondes (1953), and The Seven Year Itch (1955). In the music industry, stars like Elvis Presley emerged in the mid-to-late 50's, with hit songs like, Jailhouse Rock (1957), and Hound Dog (1956). The image of Elvis Presley shaking his hips has become iconic, but at the time, most did not approve of his music or his dance. Other musicians like Frank Sinatra ruled this time, with songs like Come Fly With Me (1958).
