Due to the pandemic, the English department launched a Moodle platform to work on the EFL program I-IV. My students go through the grammar, reading, listening, writing and speaking parts. Later, they have to post on the Teams group, in the 'Tasks' tab, their writing and the recording of the learning task they were reviewing. Instead of instructing students and delivering stuff for them to learn by heart, as much as possible, I try to provide examples and ask questions so that they can think / reflect and reach the answers on their own. I often do that with grammar or with vocabulary, namely compound words. By privileging process over product, I expect them to develop their autonomy and critical thinking skills.
Sadly, we are too focused in delivering our curricula and I admit that sometimes I lack the time (and the courage) to plan the best strategies or activities for problem based learning.

I am a teacher of English in Romania. I have the opportunity to use a computer in class and I try as much as possible to use visual aids (as a picture says more than a thousand words). I also love warming up my students with 5’ music in order to create atmosphere.

At least one activity every class is planned to be performed by the students on their mobile phones, which they really enjoy and I can assess their progress easily.

I try to plan as often as possible brainstorming activities for introducing speaking and writing activities.

In my opinion, and regarding the reality in Portugal, nowadays we have a lot of problems to deal with a great number of portuguese students. Portuguese society, and more specifically, a great deal of portuguese families, are ill. Public school is not regarded by them as an important thing in their kids life; knowledge is not important, learning is not a fundamental tool on which life and futur depend. There are other interests much more valuable for them. Parenting skills are weak or even none. The lack of values is enormous, the disrespect, the rudeness to each other. We became aware of the total lack of interest towards any kind of learning. Kids do not want to learn because it implies work, engagement, effort, discipline, rules, things they are not used to observe. Many students refuse to take notes, to read, they do not care about doing a regular study ou the homeworks. Some of them came to school without the books they need. Sometimes these books disappear misteriously. In the classroom they do not behave, they love to destabilise, laughing and talking loud, and playing jokes. Celestin Freinet said once that «no one should give water to a thirstyless horse» and he was right. I say it in different and way: Teachers are throwing their peals to pigs.

Motivating students is very difficult at times. In order to make them more involved I do try to give them those topics closer to their age range and at the same time give them also those hints and clues to find themselves more at ease with the various tasks. I work with very young pupils (only 5 years old). Despite this, I have noticed that when we give them the possibilty, with the right stimuli, they can plan their activities, organize themselves, think and share with peers in a very collaborative way. I think that children of all ages should enjoy their learning, but this doesn't happen frequently, as teachers are worried about the subjects. "Learning to learn" should be our first goal!

Learning to learn is, indeed, a key competence nowadays with so much information and so many requirements. It is the smart way of learning which makes the most of all the opportunities, strategies and practices available while fulfilling one's individual potential.
