The passage in act 4 scene 1 in Macbeth is a tribute to King James, who was a descendant of Banquo. He was king of both England and Scotland when Macbeth was performed. James VI of Scotland was the only heir to the English throne when Elizabeth I died without one, and so he became James I of England. This means that he had two coronations and would have received two different orbs, one at each coronation. Monarchs would also be presented with a scepter representative of the three countries over which he rules: England, Scotland, and Ireland. The Weird Sisters predicted that Banquo would "get kings," they were not wrong. James I was the current king on the throne when Macbeth was first performed, and he could actually trace his own lineage back to Banquo. Thus, Shakespeare kind of reverentially nods to his king by including this detail of his family history.

King James I was born June 19, 1566 at Edinburgh Castle, Scotland. His parents were Mary, Queen of Scots, and Henry Stewart, Lord Darnley. He ascended to the throne at age 36 on March 24, 1603. He was king of England from 1603 until his death in 1625. He died March 27, 1625 at Theobalds Park, Hertfordshire, at the age of 58. King James I of England would have been pleased with the vision of a long line of kings carrying “twofold balls and treble scepters” because the “balls” refer to the orbs carried by King James when he was crowned and the “treble scepters” refer to the one scepter carried when he was crowned in Scotland and the two scepters that were carried when he was crowned in England.

Motahar Khan King James the first would be pleased by a long line of kings holding twofold balls and treble scepters because it is a commendation for him. The two balls are representing his kingship of both Scotland and England. The three scepters are also a representation of his rule. They represent the three countries he had ruled Scotland, England, and Ireland.

The "two-fold balls" refers to the golden orb given to a monarch to symbolize their leadership of the nation. King James I of England had been the only heir to the English throne and at the time was known as James IV of Scotland, but when Elizabeth I died without one, he became James I of England as well. Which meant that he had two coronations (one in each country) and would have received two different orbs, one at each coronation. Monarchs would also be presented with a scepter, and so this apparition of a king appears with three treble scepters likely representative of the three countries over which he rules: England, Scotland, and Ireland.
