If a person was to come out as gay, they would be ostracised from society. This is exemplified by Skipper, who ends up drinking himself to death. The upheld values of society include producing children to continue the family lineage, as well as eventually finding a husband or a wife. During this time, it was also considered unacceptable to be single, as that would mean you would have no one to carry on your lineage.
