I have noticed that students really like to have conversations with me about things outside of school. I don’t let it distract my class, but sometimes at the beginning of class to get settled in I’ll ask them about random things, or insert myself in a conversation they’re having. It builds a rapport and helps them to see me as more of a human than just an emotionless robot teacher!

Listening to my students. This should go without saying, but sometimes as teachers we’re rushed and don’t feel like listening to the million questions we get. If we treat each question as valid and important (except for stupid ones, obviously) it can show respect for students and help them feel more valued.

Good Things: 2-5 minutes at the beginning of class. Sharing things we are excited about, looking forward to, achievements. As the year goes on the students take turns leading this and calling on their peers. There is always some feedback to their responses though. Not just, “ok, cool”, but some type of acknowledgment and interaction with them.

Changing groups: I change my desk arrangement 4-5 times per month. The kids know it will change and they will sit by everyone in the class and this helps to break down communication barriers and create a more positive classroom culture.
