The image strongly represents the struggle that immigrants face especially in Mango Street. The person in the image is trying to push the weight uphill while he’s being weighed down. The weight in the image depicts racism, poverty, shame and many other issues immigrants face and the American Flag shows that this happens quite often in the United States.

“In the meantime they'll just have to move a little farther north from Mango Street, a little farther away every time people like us keep moving in. (13)”

Here, Esperanza is stating that “people like us” are other immigrants and people similar to her ethnic background. This relates to the immigrant experience because it essentially means that when a new latino or any family that isn’t caucasian moves in, Cathy moves out.

“Those who don’t know any better come into our neighborhood scared. They think we’re dangerous….All brown all around, we are safe. But watch us drive into a neighborhood of another color and our knees go shakity-shake and our car windows get rolled up tight and our eyes look straight. Yeah. That is how it goes and goes.” (28)

This quote portrays that people assume that Mango Street is dangerous. However, the street is not actually dangerous at all, everyone knows and trusts each other. They are making prejudiced assumptions and basically judge a book by its cover because it’s not dangerous at all.

“Alicia, who inherited her mama’s rolling pin and sleepiness, is young and smart and studies for the first time at the university. Two trains and a bus, because she doesn’t want to spend her whole life in a factory or behind a rolling pin.”(31)

This quote shows that Alicia attends college because she doesn’t want to end up in poverty like her current situation with her family. Although she has a father that doesn’t respect her and her ideals and a dead mother, she still works to make ends meet. Due to her current situation, Esperanza wants to actually go to college and change her future. She does not want to get caught in this loop of poverty due to immigration and her status in American Society.
