She also had a friend who took ASL in high school who I can relate to since by the end of the schooling, we both felt as if we had not learned that much from the high school classes.

My classmate mentioned a disconnect with people who know a language since an in-group and out groups is formed between people who speak and people who do not speak a language. I also feel this disconnect sometimes since I was born in and grew up in the US. I speak my parents' village dialect, but I can understand the main language through childhood movies. So, I also feel a disconnect. I know what people are saying, but I cannot form complete thoughts without a dictionary in the main language. It made me very good at the dialect because I had to translate things for my family, though.

We talked about how similarly we grew up speaking our home language (Spanish; Korean) but did not have much experience reading and writing until taking classes in junior high/high school. We would speak our home language to our parents and extended relatives but would mainly use English anywhere else. Although we grew up learning our home language, we both ended up being more fluent at English.

I would say that I am definitely more proficient in English as I utilize it the most in school, work, and communicating with others. I was in only bilingual classrooms throughout elementary because my parents thought it was important for me to have the ability to communicate in both languages.
