While looking at this exhibition, perhaps you may consider what objects matter from your home? And what artefacts form your everyday life would you put in a museum?

The stand was bought and used by the Copp family who emigrated from England to America during The Great Puritan migration to boston, the family settled in New London, Connecticut in the 1700’s. During this time, Kitchens were becoming more decadent and new foods were being introduced.

The Caster Stand along with many other household objects stayed in possession of the Copp family well into the 19th century.

The design of the spoon, which shows a bird perched amid vegetation, captures the Arts and Crafts movement's reaction to these societal changes. It also highlights the value of fine craftsmanship in the face of automation. Its pear-shaped bowl and concentric ridges are reminders of a time when where extravagant features existed amidst commonplace goods. This was available to the very wealthy who could afford such luxuries. The spoon was later obtained by Mr. John Innes Kane, a scientist and member of high society in New York around this time.

It was manufactured by Kimbel & Cabus, a company based in New York who created Rococo Revival furniture in the late 19th century. Rococo Revival represented the wealth and decadence surrounding the Gilded Age, much like what can be seen in the Caddy Spoon. This particular object was found in

American homes during this time, as the idea of ‘home’ became more multifunctional as a ‘workplace’, as wealthier families were able to create offices. Today, it is very common to ‘work from home’ and has many benefits to allow people to save time and money commuting to and from work.

In contrast to the decadent items on display, this washboard showcases how the home was always a ‘workplace’. All homes would have had one of these during the 19th century and washing clothes formed part of domestic labour, as it does today. Such activities such as washing were cleaning were often carried out by the women of the household or servants. Unfortunately, the names of the makers and subsequent owners of this object have been lost to time.

This particular radio is a Philco model 48-482 tabletop radio from 1948, which below the grille cloth, has a radio tuning dial with short wave, FM and AM frequencies. FM was introduced In 1933, which provided audiences with more choice of programmes.

It was once owned Minnie Roundtree, whose husband Herman bought it for her so she could keep up with her favourite baseball team, the St. Louis Cardinals. Herman and Minnie were a couple living in Indiana, United States.

This spoon, which was produced by the renowned Tiffany & Company, is a physical representation of the economic goals that were common in the late 1800s. Its golden beauty fits Tiffany & Company's function as a seller of luxury to an expanding middle class by showcasing riches and symbolizing the desire for refinement. With its eternal connotation of purity, the lotus blossom at the base adds a layer of significance that speaks to society's search for timeless ideals in the face of the era's fast changes.

The spoon, which was obtained by way of Mrs. John Innes Kane's bequest, becomes more than just a tableware item; it becomes a treasured heritage and a quiet record of the social shifts that shaped the late 1800s. Through interaction with this sculpture, viewers peel back the layers of history to uncover a narrative influenced by changing dynamics of the home and family life in addition to the brushstrokes of creative trends and economic aspirations. This spoon speaks to the society's search of timeless ideals against the chaotic backdrop of late 19th-century social and economic changes because of its fine features and familial connection.

It was once owned by Clementine Cottee and Josephine Church, no doubt once young children who delighted in playing with this toy.

When thinking of the home, you may associate it with a time of first homes and childhood. What once treasured objects from your childhood are still in your home today?

Electric lighting was invented in the 19th century, after the creation of light bulbs. This form of lighting became increasingly common and in time more affordable. This meant by the early 20th century, it was common to see electric lighting. This particular lamp has been changed from an oil lamp to an electric lamp at some point.

It was once owned by Robert Smalls, a republican politician, who escaped slavery.

This model was designed by Henry Dreyfuss, an American industrial designer. The design is evocative of the Space Race between the US and the Soviet Union. The space race occurred during the 1950s – 1970s, where both governments spent billions competing in flying into space. It was a time when new technology was enchanting people across the world and this household object reflects how influential the space race was on capturing public imagination. While this large social event took place, objects like vacuum cleaners were becoming mass produced, where a growing middle class demanded more household appliances. Which household piece of tech do you find the most useful in your home?

When thinking of a typical house, you may think of something like this. However, our homes come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Does your home look like this? Does it challenge the stereotype

of the home?

Lithography was a popular way of communicating feelings such as humour and sentimentality in the 19th century.

The image depicts a dog watching over a sleeping baby in a wicker cradle, surrounded by fine objects such as a vase and mirror. It is an idyllic scene of home life and the idealised domestic space. Does this romanticize home life? Do you see the home as a sentimental place?

The photographer was Lewis W. Hine, who was an American sociologist and school teacher. He spent much of his career documenting child labourers and seeing the social reform of child labour laws.

The concept of public housing has always been a contentious issue in US and UK politics. There has always been a demand for more homes and more affordable homes. Housing is still an issue today and an increasing issue, as many face a difficult economic climate.

After World War II, people experienced new freedom and control over resources. Gardens and backyards started becoming an extended part of the home. Gardens were used for entertaining and relaxing in, like in this scene. With a growing suburban population that worked in white collar industries, families had the money to own more land and personalise their outdoor areas. Brands promoted this outdoor living as the ‘California Lifestyle’, which was often seen in advertisements.
