In the United states fifty years, ago no one had cell phones, and there wasn't internet. A lot of technology has been created since those fifty years. Imagine countries growing and even changing more than, there are countries like this in Southwest Asia. In Dubai, one of the United Arab Emirates seven state's, it used to be just a small town which just got electricity fifty years ago. Now Dubai is one of the biggest cities in the world. The biggest known oil reserves. An oil reserve is oil that has been found underground but remains unused. Many natural gas reserves are also in this area. Natural gas is gas that is in the earth's crust.

The oil that is used everyday all around the world today was formed a very long time ago. Oil started out as plants and animals. The transformation from this to oil and natural gas happened from sinking the the bottom of the ocean, then the heat from the earth's core and weight of the water changed it. Natural gas can sometimes rise to the surface of earth but a very small amount does. The rest of the natural gas is stuck under the earth's surface under rock that keeps almost all liquid and gas from going through it. The reason that there is a lot of oil in Southwest Asia is because this area used to be underwater. Another reason that this area contains a lot of oil is because the Iranian Plate and the Arabian Plate collided which created pockets of oil and gas. It is a very hard job to get the oil, companies have to drill deep into the earth to pump out the oil. Sometimes the oil is caught in the rocks and can not be pumped out until they put water or gas into the rocks to free the oil. Although there is much of it, the oil in Southwest Asia is not consistent throughout this area. Saudi Arabia is the largest country in the region and also contains the most oil with around 25% of the world's oil.

Oil has made a lot of the lives better in Southwest Asia. The life expectancy has went up fifteen years since oil became the main part of their economy. Children deaths of one year old and under have went down by two thirds. It is hard to measure the wealth of these countries because the countries larger in population have a low GDP because there is so many people. While the countries smaller in population have a higher GDP because of their small population. Although Oil has helped a lot of people financially, it has not ended poverty. Yemen is still one of the sixty most poorest countries in the world. Also, in the countries with a lot of oil, the money isn't always used to help people. In Iraq a large portion of their oil money has been spent on an army, weapons, and fighting wars.

The Price and Flow of Oil

The Persian Gulf War has been one of multiple wars over oil it Southwest Asia. A huge amount of countries exporting oil rely on the oil prices and also the sales of oil. The county's goals are to have oil steadily being exported out of their country. In 1960, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries(OPEC) was formed to try to meet that goal. The OPEC regulates the price of oil, trying to keep it not too high and not too low. This is not a perfect idea though as there are two main things that the OPEC can't control. Around half of the oil in the world is from countries that do not want to be a part of this plan. Conflict in the OPEC and countries not always following the rules is the second issue. Japan, The United States of America, and many countries in Europe are very big oil importers and have to try to help and hope the flow of oil continues. In 1990, the Dictator of Iraq ordered the military to invade Kuwait, this invasion gave them control of the oil fields in Kuwait.

Today the world is dependent on mostly non renewable resources. One of the main reasons for this is that renewable resources cost more to use, but recently there are cheaper ways to use renewable resources being made. Hydroelectric power was the only renewable resource that could create the massive amount of energy that non renewable resources do, but these dams could cause harm to the environment. In the future areas with a lot of sunlight or consistent winds may become big energy producing areas.
