Her parents encouraged her to study languages, with the idea that she could one day earn a living as a bilingual secretary. They believed that fluent literacy in more than one language would offer Rowling a steady, reliable career. So Rowling studied French. 

But she kept reading and writing, too. Rowling spent a year living and studying in Paris. Her love of France evolved there, and she developed her fluency in French. 

Rowling performed moderately well at university. She did her work, had friends, and lived the life of a typical young adult. In 1986, she received her bachelor of arts degree, and then set about establishing her independent adult life.

The world didn’t yet see the magic that lay inside her.

Unhappy Days
Rowling’s mother developed multiple sclerosis, an autoimmune disease of the central nervous system, when Rowling was 15. Rowling has said that her teen years were unhappy ones, marred by her mother’s debilitating illness.

Hons and Rebels
Jessica Mitford was an English author and civil rights activist. Her autobiography, Hons and Rebels, was given to Rowling when she was a teen. Rowling read it and all of Mitford’s books avidly. She deeply admired the author and would one day name a daughter after her.
