"The reading was all about Jim"- Jim was being looked for and Jim and Huck needed help
"We can run in the daytime if we want to"
They think its best to run n the day time
"Duke was pretty smart"
They're relying on what Duke says and not their own intuition.
The big idea is that Jim and Huck are kind of just be followers of the Duke and not doing what they think think is best, going in the day may be the right way but they are not doing what they think is best they're doing what the Duke thinks is best and that's wrong because he hasn't been with them through their experience enough.

Personal Morality: "Then he showed us... if we wanted to" (100-101)

Key Language:
"The reading was all about Jim., and it described him to a dot"
In this portion of the passage, it is describing the fact that Jim is being hunted down. It is also mentioned that there is a $200 award for anyone who found the slave (Jim). With an inflation rate of 1.78%, the price for Jim in 2018 would have been around $5500. This gives a motive to the townspeople to try to capture Jim because this bounty really raises the stakes on his head.

"Ropes are the correct thing"

"...and whoever would catch him and send him back, he could have the reward and expenses."
In the reality of this era, catching a runaway slave would give a high reward.
"We all said the duke was pretty smart, and there couldn't be no trouble about running daytimes."
Huck, the duke and the king are trying to get away so that Jim won't be captured.
Normally, a person would think that hiding a runaway slave is insane, but the group is morally strong enough to believe that he should not have to go back and be tortured.
