My biggest takeaway from this course is how nurses must remain resilient even with the presence of these contemporary issues. I did not realize prior to starting the profession how necessary it is for nurses to have positive coping mechanisms in place. We see and deal with a lot of difficult concepts throughout our shifts. It is essential for individuals to have education on contemporary issues in the event that they may experience one in their workplace.

It can be difficult for nurses to implement effective coping mechanisms during times of disaster. It is essential for nurses to assess their own feelings throughout the disaster and implement positive coping mechanisms during the recovery period. For nurses during the pandemic, it must have been a mentally draining time due to work affecting their personal lives. It is critical for nurses to maintain a strong support system in times of crisis as they are firsthand witnesses to illness and death. It can be traumatic for some, and they may need to explore those feelings with their loved ones.

One of the issues presented in disaster nursing are the lasting mental effects that healthcare professionals experience when caring for patients affected by emergencies. This relates to the idea of contemporary nursing issues because it reflects the contemporary issue of burnout. Many nurses experience burnout from a multitude of factors, two of them being the effects of stress and deteriorating mental health.

The nursing process is present within disaster triaging protocols. The nurse is responsible for assessing characteristics of individuals involved in a disaster. From there, they label each individual as a color based upon the severity of symptoms. The care can then be planned based upon their necessity of treatment. Timely interventions must then be implemented to increase the survival rates of victims. The nurse is then responsible to actively evaluate if the interventions are successful or not and if more supplies can be utilized to save the individual.
