What Drives the Character(s) to think, feel, and/or act the way they do?

One major factor that drives the way the grandma feels is the changing of times from when she was born and grew up in to where she is now. "He and the grandmother discussed better times."(5) “These days you don’t know who to trust,” he said. “Ain’t that the truth?” (4) The problem that she has is that she cannot or has not understood that the way she grew up in is long gone has changed over time and has left her to play catch up.

We know that the family leaves their home in the morning, and that they leave Red Sammy's Famous Barbecue "the hot afternoon." So we can presume it's most likely summer. We know it has to be from 1919 forward because the author mentions coca cola stock which was released to the public in 1919.

The setting helps convey the social changes that are going on around the grandma and it helps the reader understand that she deliberately chooses to not accept change and just see how stubborn she is, it also gives an understanding into just what kind of environment the grandma grew up in.

How does the particular sequence of events and the manner in which a text presents those events to a reader affect a reader's experience with the text?

The reader gets to experience anger and frustration with the grandmother, from the not wanting to go to Florida and instead wanting to go to Tennessee. She warns her son Bailey “Here this fellow that calls himself The Misfit is aloose... headed toward Florida", which is a sign of foreshadowing, and then the misfit makes her appearance when the family had the accident along the dirt road with the lines “Good afternoon,”. Then the story ends with the family having a not so good afternoon.
