The song explores the population as sheep, believing everything they're told and ignoring the obvious problems in the government. In addition to using an animal as an allegory, this aligns perfectly with how the animals act in Animal Farm. They ignore the growing power of the pigs, their shrinking rights, and the fact that their human rebellion has gone nowhere. As the song states, "What do you get for pretending the danger's not real; meek and obedient you follow your leader." Then, when the pigs kill "Snowball's followers", the animals are astonished they would do something like that- despite the signs being right there for them. "What a surprise! A look on terminal shock in your eyes. Now things are really what they seem; no, this is no bad dream." Clover begins to have some thoughts  of remorse and fear of the future, but doesn't speak up, and things only get worse. The animals see their slavery as a blessing, because they see it as freedom, symbolized by the lines "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want... With bright knives he releaseth my soul; He maketh me to hang on hooks in high places." And they still hold onto the hope of the rebellion: "When cometh the day we lowly ones through quiet reflection and great dedication master the art of karate. Lo, we shall rise up and then we'll make the bugger's eyes water." The final verses talk about the animals' fight against the humans, and how they are succeeding at keeping the humans away. And eventually they win: "Have you heard the news? The dogs are dead!" And yet, they fail to see the true issue they should fight against- the pigs, taking all power for themselves. The song ends with "You better stay home and do as you're told. Get out of the road if you want to grow old." If the animals want to live (a miserable life, but a life), they have to now obey the pigs and not steep out of line.
