Foundational Reading Skills: A Guide for Caregivers by Mrs. Clark

Reading is made up of many skills that work together like puzzle pieces or building blocks. Together, these skills build a strong foundation. When one area grows, it helps strengthen the others—leading to confident, capable readers. Here are some tips, strategies, and supports for building these essential skills at home with your child. Begin with Phonemic Awareness—working with the most basic building blocks of language—and build your foundation from there, moving left to right. But note that a strong vocabulary is beneficial at every step.

There are 26 letters in the English alphabet, but 44 phonemes (individual sounds). This is because we often combine letters to make new sounds, like /th/ in thumb.

Practice saying these sounds with your child along with the video. Be sure to pronounce the sounds without any extra sounds after them, just the "pure" sound of each letter, as modelled in the video.
