I really like the statement you made in your philosophy in regards of students’ need to be exposed to other’s struggles regardless to rather they feel that they are at a disadvantage or not. Teaching empathy and sympathy is vital. Social Justice in YAL is definitely a tool to do so.

I often do this through reading texts that tackle the tough social issues of today and the past. I think the classroom should be a safe space for them to learn and formulate their own educated opinions of their society. My first rule when engaging in discussion about controversial or hot-button topics is to ask all of my students to be respectful of one another and have an open mind. I encourage them to move beyond themselves in their thinking and to take the perspective of others into account. It is easy to go along with what they have heard or seen on television or social media, but I challenge them to question those opinions and find evidence of why people think or respond the way they do.
