The introduction of Mustard Gas was extremely deadly to both sides of the war. Initially used by the Germans Mustard Gas became heavy when inhaled leading to men suffocating on dry land. The gas could also cause men to go blind as the gas would often burn exposed skin. Gas would often be loaded into artillery shells and fired spread out to do the most damage to the other side. The introduction of Gas Warfare led to a changing of warfare as a whole in the Great War as now every solider had to have a gas mask in case of a chemical attack.

Life in the trenches was dangerous for many reasons. Firstly, enemy raids and artillery fire killed many soldiers however that was not the deadliest force of the war. Disease reigned all throughout the trenches as the muddy wet conditions helped the spread of diseases such as dysentery and cholera. The earth itself was also extremely dangerous as the unstable ground often collapsed or the mud swallowed men weak from disease.

Machine Guns allowed for hundreds of rounds to be fired in mere seconds. This is especially important when compared to the rifles at the time that could only fire a margin of that a minute. Due to the new weapons devasting effect entire machine gun divisions were formed around the new gun. These divisions would bring the machine gun into the spotlight showing just how deadly the machine gun could be when used right especially in trench warfare.
