This is a book about the Battle of Stalingrad. And the various accounts from people who fought there. In the winter of 1943 the Germans launched operation Barbarossa which attempted to invade and destroy the soviet union. The goal of this was to avoid a war on 2 fronts by winning a decisive victory over Russian forces so they could focus all their attention on Britain. The blitzkrieg effectively pushed very deep into Russia all the way to Stalingrad. Hitler felt that the city had much more strategic value than it seemed, since it was named after the current leader. And the thought the capture of the city would demoralize the leader and his forces so much that it would force them int surrender. Forces pushed into the middle of the city then found themselves trapped by an insurmountable amount of soviet troops. The battle that commenced was one of the bloodiest battles of the whole war and consisted of very close quarter combat and a total of 2 million soviet deaths. In the end General Zhukov encircled the city and forced a German victory and the majority of German forces were killed or captured. This marked the beginning of the Red Tide overtaking most of eastern Europe and their advance would not be stopped until they reached Berlin.

But it does give a very detailed description of the German advance to the city of Stalingrad. The absurd Russian names and non-linear nature of the text could make it hard to follow if you're a new reader.
