Each of the kings that were in charge of ruling always had the same promise. To modernize and regain the old glory of Iran. They did this by spending money on celebrations, all to impress those above, not thinking about the citizens who paid the taxes. Iran was valuable as it is an oil country, and so people were always trying to take control of Iran, solely for its wealth. They had no care for the general population, invested only in their wants. As Iran was an oil country, they gained + made lots of money. Inflation, or the prices going up occurred, and the Iranian economy started to drop. As an effect of the Iraq-Iran war, Iran spent 500 billion during it, and at this point, the government had control of 80% of the economy. They focused only on the top 1% while the rest dealt with poverty, bomb threats, and more.

This happens after Marjane’s Uncle Anoosh dies. She yells at God for trying to console her and expresses her grief. This happens many times in the book, whether a family member or friend dies, the key to heaven and the boys that believed in it, and the separation of Marjane and her family at the end of the book. Grief is something that has impacted everyone she interacted with within her story, but where does it come from? Where do the events that cause this come from? The key to heaven, a ploy for poor boys to be sent to the battlefields, as more of a distraction than real people meant to be kept alive. The boys + the poverty employed by the government, like a pawn. “A person or thing manipulated and used by others”. Uncle Anush, a forward-thinking man, who gets found and executed by the government, is labeled a “Russian spy”. He’s not alone. Hundreds of thousands of people died either by execution or during the Iraq-Iran war. (Estimated about 250,000). And finally, the separation of Marjane when she goes to Vienna to live with her mother’s friend. After she leaves, her mother collapses, overwhelmed by emotion. These three examples are all tied together from the fact that the government was behind it. They gained money, and power, through many transitions of power, while in actuality they started wars, killed their people, and separated families.

The Modern text translation reads as “And before I—who was married to Romeo by you—am married to another man, I’ll kill myself.” This scene explains how Juliet pronounce she’d rather be dead than to be with anyone else besides Romeo. If we trace back the reasons why, we arrive at the ever-lasting blood feud, caused many years ago by a cause long-forgotten but still withheld. They’re toxic and arrogant to each other at best, and vicious murderers at worst. We see how far that goes when Tybalt kills Mercutio, Romeo kills Tybalt, and when Paris attempts to kill Romeo. It’s a never-ending rope-pull match, neither 0ne refusing to let go of the rope and accept peace, and it is this fault that kills Romeo and Juliet. The Montagues and the Capulets are so focused on their internal hatred, which is not even their own but rather the ghost hatred from the original lords. Because of this, neither family realizes how much stress and pressure that puts on everyone until Romeo and Juliet die. They needed death to look outside their vendettas and finally were able to change the atmosphere.
