As Singapore grew as a bustling port city under the British, Hawkers were initerant people that took up being a hawker as being a hawker required Low capital and was an easy job for them as they were unskilled and illiterate. Hawkers provided Singapore’s growing population with cheap and affordable meals that were delicious, goods and services such as fruits, vegetables, and polishing of shoes. Date: colonial period

I chose this source as it shows the contribution of Eurasian immigrants to Singapore during the colonial period. Eurasians had white-collar jobs and were employed as clerks  in the civil service, European banks, commercial and trading houses. The Eurasians had an advantage over the other ethnic communities in colonial Singapore because of their fluency in the English language as well as their familiarity with the habits and customs of the British colonial administrators. Furthermore, as most Eurasians were Christians, they had better access to mission schools and thus tended to be better educated. This shows that the Eurasian community had a big role in the development of Singapore.

Chinese opera performances were observed in Singapore in the 19th century when Chinese immigrants brought the art form into Singapore. Operas are typically performed as an art form for entertainment, as well as during religious occasions at temples and celebrations at clan associations. Chinese opera allowed early people in Singapore to appreciate Chinese culture in multiracial Singapore, and at the same time provide joy and entertainment to the people.
