The strategic plotting and underhanded manipulations of Madame Sylvie to save her family’s plantation from financial ruin plays out with palace intrigue that rivals any monarchy’s nastiest scheming. Every character is memorable, and Williams-Garcia extensive research (read A Note From the Author) equips her to create a transportive sense of place.  I was wowed.
