Again, I was looking forward to this. In my day-to-day life, I regularly go to concerts and festivals. For me, these festivals are also a part of our culture in Belgium. Pukkelpop, Werchter, Graspop, ... To name just a few festivals that also have some worldwide fame.
The music that we came into contact with here today in Guadeloupe took us back to the roots of the people. The barrels that came with the slave ships were transformed into tambour/ka. Until the 80s, this instrument had a negative connotation, but today the Guadeloupeans play them with true pride (as Edgar showed us). 
I found it an enrichment to lose myself in the drumming and became enormously fascinated by Edgar's projects to support children and adults therapeutically with this. A passionate man, on the inside and on the outside.
That music connects proved the pleasant atmosphere that was present during our delicious Bokit meal afterwards. I had the feeling that we connected more after the music lesson. There was a lot of chatter and I also enjoyed hearing the compliments from other team members. I personally pushed some boundaries: singing alone like this in front of a group of (at the moment still fairly unknown) people was something I had never done before in my life (bucket list: check).
I end my reflection today with a quote from "the queen of pop" Madonna, who perhaps not entirely coincidentally broke through in the 80s, and thus pointed out to les Guadeloupeans to get their traditional instruments back because "music makes people come together".

In many European countries, music is often linked to performances and an audience. Music is and can be much more than that. In Rita's testimony and Edgard's story, music takes on a very different meaning. Rita told us about the Kanklas, an instrument that, according to tradition, is made from the tree of life of people and is then seen as an instrument with which you can make the dead people talk. People do not play for an audience, but for themselves, and music is mainly used to learn to live with and accept reality. In Guadeloupe, music is also very important, both for the individuals and for society. Here, you don't go to music school to learn to play an instrument. Music is transmitted from generation to generation. They also assume that everyone can play, because the body is the instrument: everyone has a heart and the beating of the heart is always there when we listen. The instruments also lend themselves to it. You can join in immediately. We experienced this at first hand during the drumming initiation on the ka. We learned the basics of drumming together and immediately noticed that we also made progress as a group.

What I also learned: 
- Multicultural education does not always have to be about projects in which you point out prejudices to pupils. Every little reference (content integration) and learning to take a critical look at the world around us, is a good way to make a difference.
- Give pupils responsibility! For example: let them prepare something when you go to a museum. In this way they can decide what they want to learn, they learn to look for information and they learn to deal with responsibility. "If you take them, they will not learn."
- Tip from Edgard: Ask active, disruptive pupils to come and sit with you and ask them: Who is the problem? And what is the problem with him or her? In many cases, the pupil will start to tell you and the inappropriate behaviour will disappear.
