1. Headline: "You Can Never Understand One Language Until You Understand at Least Two"

2. I chose the title based on the quote from Geoffrey Willans. Over the last two days we have discussed the importance of using the mother-tongue in the classroom and just how the use of several languages can increase a student's comprehension and desire to learn. In the article it presents the story of children in a multicultural classroom communicating with each other and building upon their knowledge from sharing their different cultures and languages.

Headline
"Different Voices, Different Tongues, Better Growth: How Diversity in Language Can Influence your Child's Educational Growth"

I chose to break the text down into a title, followed by a small caption outlining it in more detail. The title focuses on the idea that through the use of different people who communicate and use different languages we can have better growth. The smaller caption is targeted at parents who will read "Child's Educational Growth" and be enticed to read it as it discusses how they can help their child become more academically inclined. Now we have, in a way, swayed them into reading an article that encourages the use of mother tongue language being used at home without telling them to do it. In doing so, they are convinced that it is their own idea and will then begin to implement it of their own volition.

From this workshop, I have come to a stronger understanding that the use of the mother tongue at home is greatly beneficial for the student's growth and can enable the parents to feel like they are a part of their child's learning in a positive way. This has also encouraged me to open the class library to be more multilingual and even bilingual. It has also given rise to many ideas and plans that will hopefully be implemented in our term 3 or next year.

Headline by Catherine

This workshop has validated many of my beliefs by bringing back into focus what matters. As I digested the article, I saw the practices of the teacher modeling kindness as she took the time to understand her students and pulled out meaning and further inquiry by providing them a safe space and ways to approach their own stories. She built community in her class by validating everyones story and celebrating diversity. This has always been the approach to teaching and learning that resonates with me and that I most aspire to enact together with those around me.
What spoke to my heart today was the reminder by Kelsey to bring the JOY and how powerful that is to motivate and inspire. I leave you with the following article which has inspired me for many years called Joy in School by Steven Wolk https://www.ascd.org/el/articles/joy-in-school (early years teachers may recognize it as something I left in the staffroom for you all for some time)

They were about valuing the whole child when determining and creating a positive classroom environment that is accessible to all.
While the article valued different languages as a tool in accessing learning, it also spoke about how students used things such as art and technology to make and communicate meaning.
It was about recognising every tool, talent, and learning style that students are bringing to the classroom, and fostering an environment that shows all these approaches matter, and each student matters.
