The most pressing way that bias can affect authentic praise is through the lowering of standards/expectations. For example, let's say a high school teacher has an implicit bias where he or she expects their students of color to achieve less academically. That teacher could potentially find themselves praising students for tying their shoes or asking to go to the bathroom. These low expectations are what cause many students to become disengaged in their education.

The teacher also did not seem confident, but I did enjoy seeing how they used guiding statements to help students know where to start, but when a student answered I feel like there was a lot of talking from the teacher and not much listening. There was also no words of encouragement from the teacher when a student answered.

Ultimately, the students were probably feeding off the teacher's energy, which made me think that these students were disengage. Actions that we could take in order to reengage them is walking around up to the front and come back around.

I would have either made a blanket statement in the classroom just kind of saying "I want to make sure everyone has their heads up paying attention so you don't miss anything important in the lesson." This way I am not calling the student out directly in front of the class. Or, I would walk by and tap the desk to wake the student up.

"If you can hear me and you are listening, please put two hands on your head. Great. I am going to read a portion of our reading and afterwards I will be asking someone to volunteer and elaborate, or speak in your own words, what the reading is saying. This will allow us to have a better understanding of what the reading is saying and it will help us move forward in our lesson. Does anyone have any questions for me before we get started?"
