Today I have learned that culture means caring. The Mémorial ACte is an important museum which helps to work up the tragical history of slavery. What is also shocking is the fact that slavery still exists all over the world. Why?

Let‘s care more about each other. Not only about our family and friends. We can’t deny that our culture and our identity is influenced by history and that it is fluid.

My favorite quote of the day:

„We have to learn to live together, like brothers, otherwise we will perish together like blockheads“ (Martin Luther KING)

Experience of this day was very interesting for me, because I didn't know much about slavery. It was interesting to visit Memorial museum, to feel the spirit of Guadelupe's history and the history of slavery, which firstly is immortilized in the exterior of museum building. It is impressive, how people in such a conditions created their own culture, which is so much colorfull, rhytmic, unifying people from different continents. I was unpleassantly surprised about the extent of slavery then and It's a pitty, that slavery is not only a history now. It is going on only in different way. And I had no idea, that in my country, Lithuania, we had about 10 000 slaves. It makes me feel, that we all are the part of the past whenever we are.
And at the end about reaggy :) That is a great way for manifest about equal rights, love and peace between different races.

Today I had a change to visit Memorial ACTe, the memory of the slave trade and slavery. I was touched and impressed. The whole experience was eye opening.

This museum center would be great place to bring my own students. The exhibition was built in very “audience friendly” way and it really made you feel and think at the same time. Stories were told not only trough text but really visually. Art pieces trough out the exhibition halls made the whole thing even more effective. The exhibition was impressive and offered many aspects to get familiar with and start thinking this hard subject which is still present in our world today. Human rights, how we treat each others or think about others and ourselves trough other people. The theme of slavery is heavy, but still there are or has been cultures behind it or born trough it that feel very much alive and rich. It is hard to think about how these people in this island have survived and started to build and richen their own culture with these mixed elements and dark background.

“Culture is what we care about.” It is changing all the time little by little with individuals.

Today we visited the Memorial Museum of the History of Slavery, where we had various opportunities (listening to an audio guide, reading information, exploring cultural artefacts) to discover the culture of the people of Guadeloupe since the discovery of Columbus. The history of slavery has caused many thoughts, reflection on human rights and responsibilities, differences in attitudes and respect for human rights and freedoms. It was interesting to get to know the world of slaves who created their own culture that united people and allowed them to express their emotions, thoughts and beliefs. I was excited about free spirit of slaves – their music, dancing, clothing, carnivals, handcrafts.

I was shocked by information about slavery today: what forms it takes, how big it is (about 36 million in 2014). The information about child slavery, organ donation and sex slaves were especially memorable. My colleague and I discussed how important it is an early age to develop a free, self-aware, respectful person and one‘s who respects the rights of others. Another topic that needs to be talked about in schools is that slavery is connected to poverty, to the experiences of people who need to think how to live in poor conditions. It is very important that people talk openly about what matters most in life.

Today we have been in the MémorialACTe- the museum of the history of Slavery in Pointe -à- Pitre. It is a special building near to the harbour and looks like a very big nest. It seems very fragile. But the construktion of steel is strong and should remember to the roots of an fig tree. The black outside with sprinkle in it remembers to the dead slaves. Guadelupe was a center of slavery since 1700. In connection to the france revolution 1848 slavery officialy was stoppt . But it takes a lot of time to choose the circumstances for the free slaves. In 1926 the league of nations signed a contract to forbit slavery.
For me the building corresponds with the themes inside. The exhibition makes me aware that the history of slavery is not old. And it belong till to our times. This was not so present for me.

Today we visited the Memorial ACTe in Point a Pitre where I learned more about slavery. It was very impressive. Through visualisation and audio one could get realy in to the theme. It was interesting to learn how the slaves comming from different cultures in Africa managed to kreate a new culture in the new country that brought them together.
I was shocked to learn that slavery still exists in that extent all over the world.

The visit of the museum of the history of slavery in Pointe-à-Pitre was loaded with emotions, as the exhibition brought alive the suffering and the destinies of millions of enslaved people - and the fact that slavery has not disappeared, it has just taken new forms. Too much to bear.
But we also got the message that we now live in another time, and that the descendants of the enslaved think that there is no place for anger for the past, it's better to make the best of what is today. Don't feel anger and hate for the past, deal with now.
We were not allowed to take photos in the museum, so I chose this photo of my daughter that I took after the visit. After today's experiences, I see this picture as an image full of hope for our planet and its inhabitants, because our youth are much wiser, have more knowledge and understanding of the world and its people than we did at their age, and they see the future through new eyes.
