While technology such as computers or even projectors weren't common in the classrooms, an invention like the intercom was still implemented in most schools. They would announce holidays, birthdays, and even emergency drills through the intercom system. It was also how they said the "Pledge of Allegiance" which is still a practice used in modern days.

The intercom was invented in 1894.

1985: Getting Started

Sophomore year of high school, the first year my mom was introduced to computers. Students were only allowed to use them in a introductory class. Learning in that class let my mom help her dad with data entry at his company. How cool is it that the younger generations can make a big impact on how the world works by working with the older generation.

This was also the year Microsoft was released.

2004: More Computers

While the years passed, computers have evolved more and more. Even in the 21st century, computers were still just a thing only seen in computer labs. Sites that helped you learn how to type, and PowerPoint were some things that were taught at the time. Now, my friend is a speed demon at typing.

2008: The Year of the Laptop

Laptops made it to the classroom! You could rent laptops from library and carry them from class to class. This was great because there was no need to go to a computer lab in order to access a computer. That also means less gross hands were touching the same device.

With the introduction of the laptops, there was also the introduction to the touch pad. Down with the ball trackball!

~2000: Is it a Game? Is it Learning Tool?

Even though Kid Pix was invented in 1989, it was only around the early 2000s that my friend and his fellow elementary classmates were able to use learning games. Kid Pix was a software application that let kids draw and express their creativity.

1980's: Starting with the classics

The typewriter was invented in 1868 and was still being used a century later when my mom was in school. This was her least favorite technology she used growing up because even though a typewriter was a good alternative to writing, you couldn't do anything if you made a mistake. Not to mention, it was only a little bit later that they could start using keyboards on a keyboard. The typewriter didn't have much impact on her education.
