The Aztecs were the shortest living civilization. They only lasted from 1428 to 1519 C.E. They were destroyed by Spain. In the 1200's C.E., the Aztecs entered a place called the Valley of Mexico. When Aztec priests saw their sign from the gods, an eagle, they knew this was the place for their new city. This became the center of the Aztec Empire.
Tenochtitlan was the name of the new city. Tenochtitlan because one of the largest cities in the world. The Aztecs made this unwanted island into a beautiful city. But how? First, they gained land from the lake by sinking timbers into the water to make walls as well as filling between the timbers with mud, boulders, and reeds. With these steps they created tiny islands called "floating garden" or Campinas. Tenochtitlan became a beautiful city and amazed the Spanish. Even though Tenochtitlan ranged over 5 square miles, people somehow had an easy time getting around it. One way was through a crossroad that laid at the foot of the Great Temple. Another fast way was going around the island by boat or canoe. This city was so popular that thousands of people visited it every year. Some came for business, some came as pilgrims, and some just wanted to see the beauty of this city.
Tenochtitlan began as a simple small city. But after a few years this city soon became the capital of a growing empire. It soon stretched from the Gulf of Mexico to the Pacific Ocean. The Aztec Empire was a loose union of hundreds of cities that were forced to pay tribute to them.
