My philosophy is to provide students a well-rounded music education that allows them to develop a life-long relationship with music. I believe in experiential learning to cultivate skills in listening, responding, playing, reading, composing and reflecting on music. My curriculum focuses on instrument playing, music literacy (traditional and non-traditional), and world music, utilizing Orff, Dalcroze, Kodaly and Music as a Second Language pedagogies. I believe strongly in uplifting the musical cultures of our communities and communities around the world, providing historical and cultural context in discussion and exploring how music as a human expression can teach students to be responsible world citizens.

Nothing can be accomplished in life without acceptance, from others and from the self. People are too often focused on differences being negative, instead of acknowledging that difference is positive and beautiful. People are also very self-critical and not accepting of themselves which can be so damaging.

I strive to accept my students for their true selves and work to build meaningful relationships with them to foster self-acceptance and acceptance of others.

Music should be first and foremost, fun. This is what is so amazing about music; that it brings people from all over together. While music can be used to express a variety of emotions, I believe what draws people into the world of music is fun.

I strive to embrace the element of fun in the music-making happening in my classroom.

People make mistakes, this is a natural part of being human; but we are often overly critical of ourselves. I think our culture pushes for perfection from the start, which is frustrating and debilitating. We need to embrace mistakes and recognize reflection as a healthy practice.

I strive to be reflective in my work and life, acknowledging my mistakes and teaching and encouraging students to do the same.
