Frederic was a Jewish reformer. He was born on the 23rd of April, 1813, Milan. Ozanam was the 5th of 14 children, son of Jean and Marie Ozanam. Antoine-Frederic Ozanam was a French Literary scholar, lawyer, journalist, and equal rights advocate. It was in the city of Lyons Frederic had grown up. Ozanam's parents had been doing community work during their time in this city. His Father was dividing his time to help out at the local hospital and his Mother was helping assist those in need. Only 4 of the 14 children of the Ozanam family lived until adulthood. Unfortunately Frederic passed on the 8th of September, 1853.

The message behind Rerum Novarum is that there is a great difference between the few wealthy people and the poverty of millions whose conditions are a bit better than slavery, and that people are more important than materialistic things.

This story is relevant to Frederic Ozanam because he went out to the poor suburbs, willingly, ang gave them what no one else would. He cared for those when no one else would. He didn’t mind giving up his day to look after others. Frederic Ozanam is one of the significant contributors to the first great social encyclical of Pope Leo XIII, Rerum Novarum.

The epidemic that hit Paris in 1832 is what inspired Frederic to help the poor, homeless and lost people of the epidemic. In 1833, the St Vincent De Paul society was founded by Frederic Ozanam, 20 at the time, in Paris. Ozanam was inspired by Saint Vincent De Paul’s legacy so he decided to name the society after the famous French Saint of the poor.

Throughout his life Frederic wrote to many of his friends and most importantly his Family. These writings to his father are wishing him a happy feast day. This shows how celebrant and caring Frederic was to his close ones. Other writings to his friend are congratulating him on the new year and just to write to them in general. This means to me that Frederic enjoyed celebrating and rejoycing with his close ones.

The basic storyline of this parable is that you should treat those in need as your neighbour. The story is about a Jewish man who was robbed on the side of a road. A Levite and a priest walked past and ignored the man. A Samaritan walked past and helped the man. Samaritans are despised by Jews as they were half Jews. Intermarriages formed between half Jews and half gentiles. Following Purity laws - didn't want to get dirty they were trained in Jewish law, literature and tradition. Similar to priests, Levites worked in the temple, purity was important to them but rules regulating them were not as strict. The author wrote this story because Jesus had his own beliefs, he did not follow the Jewish laws, he told a story to a group of Jews who strictly followed these rules. He also wrote this story because he wanted to make people think about the inner goodness of people. Jesus tells parables to convey a message to his audience in a story-like form.

The Parable of the Good Samaritan-

25On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?” 27 He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’[a]; and, ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’[b]” 28“You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.” 29 But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbour?” 30 In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.33 But a Samaritan, as he travelled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii[c] and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’ 36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbour to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?” 37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

His commitment to helping these people inspired him to make a society that is easily accessible today. Frederic's legacy is the founder of the St Vincent De Paul society. This story was set between 0 to 70BC on a Rocky terrain, Desert looking, Long road.

The guy that was robbed was a certain type of person (he did not follow the purity laws) and was hated and that was why the priest and Levite did not help him. Yet the Samaritan helped him During this time in history, people usually only had one set of clothes and the robbers stripped the Jewish man of those.

To convey a deeper message about a religious aspect of stories that people of this day can relate to and understand. I now think that no matter what your religious background, you can still help someone or provide care for people, even if you don’t have the same beliefs. I believe Pope Francis is a big figure in Catholic society as he is the head of the Catholic Church and Spreads the word of God. Saint James walked In the footsteps of Jesus as he was the first Apostle. John Bosco walked in the footsteps of Jesus as he was a Priest who preached and educated people about God. These people’s actions also reflect on Frederic Ozanam who helped those on the streets after the epidemic in Paris in 1832 and then went on to create a society to support those in need. I think that the target audience for this text would be followers of Jesus, wanting to learn about good, bad and helping. This would be the target audience because they want to follow in the path of Jesus and learn what he believed in through the stories he told. This story, I believe, resembles the actions of my reformer by helping anyone you see no matter what. Frederic Ozanam helped the not just one but whole suburbs of affected people.
