Performing in this venue with this group was very important. The ring in the colts stadium helped us sound better. However, it made the listening much harder because of how much echo the stadium has.

We played a piece of music my senior year called voodoo. It was played in pitch black, so all the music had to be memorized. It was very eerie, and we had to use cues from percussion and our own flashlights. At one point, several people got up and went into the audience, unknown to the rest of the audience, and they started screaming. In a place that wasn’t an auditorium, this wouldn’t have worked as well.

When thinking about music and space from a performance perspective, placement on the stage is really important. If there is someone in front of everyone else then depending on the space you might only be able to hear them. If you're going for a more "surround-sound" effect and literally surrounding the audience then the sound is going to be really different than a stage formation, and voices will be more isolated and the audience might only be able to hear one part rather than all of the harmonies.

When I went to Disney World for a choir event we stopped to listen to the Voices of liberty where the space was very important to their sound. They would stand in the center of this foyer and the audience sat outside that circle but the closer you were the magical it sounded.

Being one of the surround trumpets for Circus Max. it was strange to be playing offstage and having performers above and around me and the way Corigliano uses space to his advantage is like no other. Performing in a bigger hall with different levels to it is definitely a different experience than performing it in HRH

The acoustics of this space make it one of the most famous performance venues in the world. Carnegie Hall. I performed here with a youth orchestra in middle school and our sound was amplified more than I had ever heard before.

This piece was one of the last time I played with my band director as she was let go from her job. There were some people crying and my band director sobbing while co sucking trying to hold herself together for our last performance together. L. The music hit so much harder that day and everything with the dynamics felt an extra reason other than musicality. Truly our one last adventure to explore the mountains together.

Over the break, in New York City, I went to the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, where the New York Philharmonic performed a piece called Atmospheres. The piece was about using the performing space to create overtones and dissonance.

The best example I can think of would be my recent viewing of the new york philharmonic. Some of the pieces they played would not be super exciting listen to them in headphones, but being in that giant concert hall, and hearing the sounds all around you made it an unforgettable experience. -Aidan Thames

Concert halls provide a space where people know what they're getting when they go, and street performance provides a random and varied aspect that is offset by a lack of audience desire. In my experience, local house venues are an interesting combination in that the people there have an active desire for music, but don't always know what kind of music will be there. It's also a more intimate setting that's a lot of fun for both the performers and the audience - the video was taken at a house venue a group I'm in performed for, and you can see people dancing, laughing, and having a generally good time, all in conjunction with the music we were playing. It was fun for us, too, listening to the laughter and watching the dancing while also surrounded by people just listening. The music wasn't even necessarily "good" either. I made a lot of mistakes in this song in particular, but like most venues, nobody tends to notice, especially if you're playing it off with dancing.

Growing up, my sister and I performed with the Texas Girls' Choir. Our building was also used as a church on Sundays, however it didn't have the same acoustics as a normal church. Most of the performance hall was carpeted so the sound was dampened. However, with how many girls there were (I'd say there were about 150 girls) the sound was still incredible. One of my greatest memories performing there was when the director asked us to line the walls of the auditorium and sing a song that my director described as "sounding like a group of angels". I unfortunately can't remember the name of the piece, but I feel like this story can explain how important this building's atmosphere was.

I had the opportunity to play this piece in high school with my Symphony Orchestra. The hall we played it in was huge and allowed for a beautiful and resonant sound. Not only did this space make for a better recording, it also created a great experience for us as an ensemble.

I had a chance to perform this piece at my freshman year Allstate in New Mexico. When we first started rehearsing , we used the space from the room to really hear each part before we even got to the body percussion. I think this song is perfect for any space whether it’s a small room, a big auditorium, or in the middle of the forest as shown in the video because you can utilize the space to your advantage to get the perfect sound. When using the body percussion, you feel a sense security when singing this song because if you lose your place while singing, you know exactly where to start again because of how in-tune the body percussion is.

For my music and space example, I will be using Hozier singing Take Me To Church in a New York City subway. In this performance, Hozier had to project quite a bit in order to be heard over the big crowd that had formed around him and to be heard over the trains passing by. He uses his space wisely though, and has background vocalist to help to help fill the sound.

An example could be right here at Tech. Many times I would walk out into the courtyard by the SUB and see people singing or just walking around with guitars outside in the open or in an enclosed area within a building nearby. The acoustics of four walls can easily be turned into a performance session, it’s not a place you would likely think to watch or hear people make music but nature and things around us can be used for sound at any time or any place, and yes I would agree there are certain environments that are not equipped for a musical influence.

I came across a video a long time ago of a man playing guitar in the mountains. The wind in the atmosphere made the nylon strings resonate and, hence, the wind was "singing". Though this isn't a renowned space with special meaning already assigned to it as a famous venue would have, this demonstrates that the natural space around us can be utilized to create music. This is very similar to Tuvan throat singing and the reverence attributed to the sounds of nature derived by animistic principles.

I saw this back in August 3rd 2022 and thought this was such a fun experience. I grew up listening to both artists alot and to watch them perform was a gift. Formosa Quartet in an art gallery

I saw the Formosa Quartet play the Schumann second string quartet in the Blaffer Art Museam in Houston in collaboration with the artist Leslie Martinez. This was a cool performance because the audience sat in the art gallery so we were surrounded by the artwork and the hall was very good for the reverb the quartet had so the music was surrounding too. They also had a musicologist explain the connection between the art and the music.

I performed in the Lila Cockrell Theater my junior and senior year of high school for making the 3a All State Band. This was a huge accomplishment for me because it validated my talent for music and spurred my love for my clarinet and wanting to keep performing. This also showed me that with a lot of effort and hard work, I could make my dreams come true and it definitely paid off in the end.

Six Flags during the Holidays

Last year I went to six flags where they had a quartet set on a stage singing carols in the middle of the amusement park. This set up a fun atmosphere and allowed people to come and go as they pleased from the different park rides. The space was more informal, but the performance itself was of high caliber. While this created a more relaxed atmosphere for the audience, the costuming and singing of the group felt like a truly professional performance.

One of the most notable performances of my life is when I played my saxophone for the elderly at a retirement home. This was in my first year of playing saxophone, and my church asked me and some other musicians to play Christmas music for the holiday season. Because this performance was not for a judge or even for an audience expecting a world class performance, making music in this space was such a joyful experience. Because the venue itself was on the smaller side and the room was packed in with people, I could physically feel how the positive effect of music reflected off these amazing human beings.

The time I played the Verdi Requiem inside the meyerson, this experience was very special to me because this is where the DSO performs and many other famous groups. There was a time where I played in a jazz thanksgiving concert for our senior citizens at our school. The concert was held as background for the thanksgiving feast set up by the wonderful culinary team at the time. The venue was held at the upper deck outside the indoor basketball arena, which was a tightish space so we had to be quiet because jazz bands have louder instruments like saxes trombones trumpets and a kit with some less noisy instruments such as synths and a string bass. This affected the program because we had to find tunes that weren’t that “distracting” that would act as background music but we also assigned people to parts of the program. for example, I was the saxophonist, and so I had to switch off between me, and the other alto playing the alto part on different tunes due to the volume difference of one to two players. This was also an occurrence between the trumpet section trombone section, and anybody else was on multiple instruments for anybody that was playing. One instrument part, they had to just dial back the volume.

My junior year of high school my band was able to go to Washington D.C. to perform in the National Independence Day Parade. However, during our time in Washington, we went to "A Capitol Fourth" where it's an annual Independence Day concert. It's located on the west lawn of the United States Capitol Building. There were several musicians performing and the environment felt very fun and high spirited.

One time, after a concert, my friends and I went driving around town and we decided to go to a parking garage downtown and we got our instruments and played some smooth jazz from Halo 3 ODST and it gave off a mysterious and empty vibe with the reverb from the space of the parking garage.
