This project was particularly fun, although due to time constraints, I had to work on it during my work hours. In the next text, I will try to explain the process and main point that I used to complete this job and his conclusion. The initial photograph is attractive to me for several reasons. I took it during one of my first ferry trips to New York City, which adds sentimental value. Additionally, the colors of the buildings are vibrant and contrast beautifully with the clear sky. This combination of elements creates a visually striking and lively image. To transform the photograph into a more abstract image, I first focused on the buildings. I tried to extract the basic shapes, simplifying the architectural structures. Then, I considered the colors, noting that the buildings have two sides: the lit side and the shadow. I also included the base with a part of the boat and low buildings, as well as the completely blue sky. This process allowed me to create an abstract version that still retains recognizable elements from the original image. To make the image non-representative but convey the same mood or feeling, I decided to retain certain shapes so that the image would be somewhat recognizable. However, I removed the shadows and used more colors than seen in the original photograph. This approach allowed me to maintain the essence of the initial image while transforming it into an abstract work.

The process of transforming the photograph was challenging for me because I am not very skilled in manual work, especially with watercolors. However, I believe I achieved an acceptable result and enjoyed the process. Abstraction allowed me to explore new forms of artistic expression and appreciate the beauty of New York City from a different perspective.

In both compositions, the concept of positive and negative space was explored, inspired by a toy I was given in the past: a three-dimensional hexagon. This object, full of emotional value, guided creative decisions in both pieces. In the first composition, the three-dimensional hexagon stood out as positive space, clearly defined by precise lines and shading. This shading added depth and contrasted effectively with the surrounding negative space. This approach demonstrated clarity in the relationship between positive and negative space, providing a comprehensible perspective for the viewer. The second composition took a more abstract approach. Here, the hexagon was defined by a white interior acting as positive space, while a shaded background represented negative space. Although this work was creative, it did not achieve the same visual clarity or separation between spaces as the first, diminishing its overall impact. Comparing the compositions, the first was more successful due to its precision and use of shading to differentiate the spaces. The second, while interesting, could benefit from more detailed techniques to enhance the definition of negative space. If I were to repeat this project, I would experiment with additional shading methods and explore other characteristics of the toy, such as its texture or ability to move. This would add a dynamic approach and enrich the emotional connection of the compositions, making each piece more evocative.

Watercolors provide a fascinating medium for exploring color and its associations. Beginning with the base color diluted with water was an excellent way to understand its potential for blending and diffusion. Experimenting with variations of each color expanded not only the palette but also the symbolic and emotional associations tied to each. Red evokes deep human connections. Its resemblance to tones like skin, blood, chocolate, and coffee makes it feel intrinsic to life and humanity. This profound association with vitality, passion, and warmth creates a sense of intimacy when working with red. Its versatility in connecting to both human and natural elements give it a unique emotional depth. Yellow, vibrant and cheerful, resonates with brightness and energy. It brings to mind familiar objects like the sun and a pencil. When mixed with other colors, yellow transitions beautifully into shades found in nature, such as those seen in plants and orange hues. This adaptability and its connection to vitality made it particularly interesting to work with. Blue captures the essence of vastness and tranquility. It’s reminiscent of the sky and water, and its blends emphasize the liquid and crystalline qualities that evoke a sense of serenity. Working with blue felt like an exploration of fluidity, offering a calming contrast to other colors. Green encapsulates life and growth, symbolizing nature and the cycle of life. Its close association with plants and vitality made it feel like a representation of renewal and harmony. Green’s connection to life itself gave it a grounding and meditative quality. Shadows and Lights The process of creating my final compositions was an enriching and educational experience that allowed me to explore new ways of working with shadows and light. Each technique had its unique characteristics, with specific challenges and successes. The first technique posed a significant challenge in differentiating tones. Although this required a lot of time and effort, the ability to erase and try again was an invaluable advantage. After persevering, I managed to achieve an effect I’m satisfied with. This approach allowed me to experiment, correct mistakes, and ultimately produce a result that met my expectations. However, the process demanded a great deal of patience, which added complexity to the task. On the other hand, the second technique was simpler when it came to creating different tones, making the initial preparation much easier. Nevertheless, when applying the tones to the circumference, I found it more difficult to achieve a convincing effect. The rigidity of the marked method meant that any error required starting the entire process over, which became frustrating after several failed attempts. If I had the opportunity to repeat this task, I would focus my efforts on improving the second drawing, perhaps by exploring a different approach or using alternative tools. While challenging, the second technique was the most interesting to me and I believe it holds great potential for improvement. In conclusion, this project was as challenging as it was enjoyable. Both techniques allowed me to learn and develop new skills, but the second one stood out due to its originality and the room it offers for enhancement. I’m determined to continue working on this technique in the future and overcome the challenges it presents.

Reflections of Childhood in Watercolor

My painting represents a nostalgic journey into the most precious memories of my childhood, a time when worries were nonexistent and happiness was found in the simplest activities. Through my composition, I sought to capture those moments when I lived with my grandmother, surrounded by games, flowers, outings, and the warmth of a loving home. The piece centers on a seated figure, representing my present self, immersed in a process of reflecting on these memories. Various elements emerge from my head, symbolizing fragments of my childhood: a flower, a plate of food, a television, and more. Among them, there are human figures that represent me playing with my friends in the park, one of the most joyful and meaningful moments of my childhood. These objects seem to solidify in the air, as if they were memories that, although intangible, still have a vivid presence in my mind. The choice of simple figures responds to my lack of manual skill in drawing, as I didn’t want to take risks with a more complex technique. However, this decision allowed the elements to retain a sense of innocence, evoking the purity and simplicity of childhood memories. Regarding the painting, I chose to use vibrant watercolors because I felt they reflected the joyful aspect of my memories. Although handling the watercolor was challenging and at times I felt that the pencil work lost definition, I accept that it is part of the learning process and that each attempt brings me closer to improving my technique. If I had the opportunity to redo this painting, I would focus on improving the integration between the drawing and the watercolor, ensuring better preservation of the initial pencil details. I would also explore different ways of organizing the composition to achieve greater visual harmony between the floating memories and the central figure. This work was an enriching experience that allowed me to connect with my personal history and express my identity through art. It was challenging but fun, and it motivates me to continue exploring the expressive potential of painting to bring my emotions and thoughts to life.

Gardener Version 1

My final sculpture is Gardener Version 1, a robot designed with the purpose of harvesting plants, inspired by the abundant nature of my hometown. Through the use of recycled materials, I created a unique piece that represents the fusion between technology and nature.

The body of the robot is made from a container of a medicinal drink. I chose this material for its size and shape, as it provided the perfect central structure to support the rest of the components. This element not only gives stability to the robot but also represents its main functionality: being an efficient worker in the field of gardening.

For the limbs, I initially considered using straws for all the parts, but then I realized that markers were ideal for differentiating the feet from the arms. I decided to use markers as legs because their thickness and firmness provide greater support, while straws function as arms, giving a lighter and more flexible appearance. This distinction adds realism to the design, emphasizing the specific functions that each part of the robot would perform in its harvesting work.

The head of Gardener Version 1 is made from an old, non-functional camera. This choice symbolizes the robot’s vision and its ability to "observe" its surroundings, facilitating the identification of the plants it needs to harvest. Additionally, the camera serves as a base for a hat, which is essential for protecting the robot in humid climates and reinforcing its connection to the agricultural world. To complement the design, I added an antenna to the head, which enhances its robotic appearance and its potential function of receiving signals or data about terrain conditions, improving its efficiency in harvesting.

All the robot’s pieces are joined together with tape, an element that not only serves as an adhesive but also acts as a kind of clothing. The tape wraps around the body, arms, and legs, giving it cohesion and a uniform finish.

In constructing Gardener Version 1, I also paid attention to the surrounding environment. I placed roses wrapped in decorative paper next to the robot to emphasize its connection to gardening and the beauty of nature. Additionally, the background of the image features a photograph of my hometown, reinforcing the robot's link to the place that inspired its creation. This detail adds an extra layer of meaning to the sculpture, highlighting its origin and purpose.

The transformation of materials is evident in the final result. Each object, from the camera to the container, markers, and straws, evolved to become an essential part of the sculpture. What were once everyday items have now been turned into a robot with a defined purpose and harmonious aesthetics.

In conclusion, Gardener Version 1 is a sculpture that represents the union between creativity, material reuse, and a passion for nature. Through careful decisions in selecting and assembling each part, I created a functional and symbolic robot that reflects the essence of gardening and artistic ingenuity.

My final composition is centered on revealing the hidden magic of an everyday object: the flower. The process began with selecting the subject—in this case, daisies with white petals dramatically contrasting against their vibrant yellow centers. The decision to focus solely on one part of the flower was deliberate: to transport the observer into a new dimension of visual experience. By getting extremely close, I was able to capture the delicate texture, the organic shape of each petal, and the intricate arrangement of the center, highlighting the flower's inherent beauty. During the session, I experimented with different angles and distances, discovering that each variation revealed unique characteristics, thereby enriching the overall composition. I employed lighting techniques that emphasized depth and contrast, achieving an almost cinematic effect where the foreground clearly separated from the softly blurred background. This manipulation of light was crucial in creating a sense of mystery and focus on the details, underlining the natural magic I see in flowers. Additionally, taking multiple photographs allowed me to discover the ideal framing that conveyed a sense of wonder.
