Netiquette is using good behavior on the Internet and being respectful to others, this is also known as Internet etiquette. Using netiquette and good manners online helps to create positive online relationships and good communication with others. This can be through email, blogs, and social media. It is important to use netiquette because communication online is not verbal and a message to another person can be easily misunderstood or taken the wrong way if not displayed the right way. Netiquette is important for students to learn because it will help them communicate online in a way that is helpful and safe. As a professional, it is important to understand what is okay and what is not okay on the Internet because if used the wrong way it can have negative impacts on your life. This also true for someone's personal life. Posting something mean or degrading could effect future employment Using netiquette allows online communication that is safe and beneficial for those using it. Having good manners and being respectful online allows for positive communication.

Netiquette Tip #1: Grammar and Spelling Matter!

Using good spelling and grammar on the Internet is a very important part of netiquette. When writing something online, it should be professional and use proper writing styles. While it might be okay to use shortcuts on Snapchat or Facebook, any other online communication, like email, should be written professionally. This is considered a good netiquette tip because it makes what you have to say online more important. If someone were to receive an email with multiple spelling errors and abbreviations for certain words they will be less likely to take what you have to say seriously. Using correct grammar and spelling is important in education as well as in a professional setting. It is a good habit to always use grammar and spelling correctly, especially online so that people don't misunderstand what you are trying to say to them!

Netiquette Tip #2: Be Respectful!

Another good netiquette tip is be respectful. It can sometimes be easier to say hurtful things to someone through a screen and this makes it easier to be disrespectful, but it can have a big effect on whoever you are talking to. If you would not say it to the person's face it should not be said online either. It is important to remember that people have different opinions and views and if they are putting these feelings online it is not your job to be disrespectful. Everyone has different opinions and bringing someone down for their opinions online is hurtful and unnecessary. It is important to be respectful online because the people on the other side are real people and their feelings could be really hurt. Also, being respectful with online communication is just the right thing to do. Online communication should be helpful not hurtful.

When using information from other people or sources, it is important to give proper credit to the source it was received from. Without proper credit given, it is considered plagiarism which is taken very seriously in school. It is a form of academic dishonesty to take credit for other people's work by not citing the information used properly. It is important for students to understand how to give the credit for information they "borrowed" from other sources to refrain from getting in trouble with assignments at school. Students should be taught the proper way to cite information because it can prevent the act of plagiarism.

Netiquette Tip #4: Don't Post or Share Inappropriate Material!

The information that is posted online is not private. Once it is online, it becomes available to anyone who can see it or find it online. If it is not something you would want anyone to know, then don't post it. This is important to be discussed because many people post information about themselves that should remain private. Private information should be kept personal. It is important to teach students not to share inappropriate material online because what is shared can easily become public. Future employers can see material posted online and posting inappropriate information can also prevent you from being employed.

Teaching grammar and spelling to our future students will be very helpful for them when they begin communicate online. To teach how to use correct grammar and spelling online, we can model this with our own writing. If the students can see the teacher using proper writing rules then they should understand they have to also. You could also explain that it's important to use correct grammar and spelling because it can help you find a job and communicate with others online. You could have the students practice writing emails to a future employer for practice and go over what is okay and what is not okay when communicating online. Being able to let them practice with real life examples could help them understand how important it is. It is important that they know the difference of communicating online with just their friends on an app and when they need to act professional and use correct grammar and spelling.

Teaching students how to properly cite their sources will help them to give proper credit to the original source without academic dishonesty. I can demonstrate this with a short video to introduce the topic and explain how there are many ways to cite a source. I would introduce them to citation machine which is a free online source that they can access to help them with the process correctly. It is also important to teach them how to put in both, in-text citations as well as the works cited page. They need to know that there is a different format for citations depending on the source that is being used such as a book, website, or journal. As they continue into high school and eventually college, teachers and professors will require proper citation and will not allow plagiarism.
