Here Iago explains how Roderigo can help him. He knows that Roderigo lusts after Desdemona and is angry to learn that she is married Othello. Iago encourages Roderigo to believe that by participating in Iago’s plot, he might have the chance to have an affair with Desdemona, but in reality he is just using Roderigo.

Confess yourself freely to her, importune her help to put you in your place again." (Act II, Scene 3)

This eventually is foreshadowing how Iago will use this as a reason as to why Othello should be suspicious of Desdemona.

Iago manipulates, uses and takes advantage of people. He does this to get what he wants. One way he exploits people is by tricking them into believing they get something out of it like with Roderigo. A second way is by deceiving them that he is the honest Iago so they will believe anything he says like Othello. A third way is making them believe it was their idea, therefore does not get blamed and still gets what he wants like Cassio. Regardless of how he does it Iago will always benefit from the situation .

Iago says this as a way of going against Othello’s insistence that Desdemona is honest and would not lie to him. He points out that Desdemona has the capacity to lie and keep secrets since she hid her marriage with Othello from her disapproving father. This quote shows Iago’s skill at psychological manipulation: he subtly plants a seed of doubt in Othello’s mind, using the couple’s own love as a weapon to increase the distrust between them.
