On Saturday, August 12 Maria Gonzalez' father, Carmelo Gonzalez, discovered her dead body in a laundry basket under his own bed. It is reported that the cause of death was strangulation, and that there was evidence of sexual assault. On the day of her murder, she texted her father while he was at work saying that someone was at their apartment door, to which he responded by telling her not to open it. As of now, only 26 people had been injured among the 5 prefectures of Western Japan but the reports are still coming in. In the towns of Tottori and Okayama prefectures, rainfall for a few hours on Tuesday exceeded the average amount in April with Tottori city having 19 inches of rainfall and Okayama having 18 inches of rainfall. The storm has caused thousands of power outages along with cancelling 950 flights into and out of Kansai, Chubu and Nagoya airports.

Laura Ann Carleton was the owner of clothing shop, Mag.Pi, in Cedar Glen. She was a known LGBTQ+ ally in her area, hanging up a pride flag outside in the front of her shop. People began taking the flags, but she would continue to put them up. These things began to make her fearful of an altercation happening because of people being upset about the flags. Unfortunately, an altercation is exactly what would happen on Friday, August 23. 27-year-old Travis Ikeguchi tore down a flag from the front of the store, which caused Carleton to go out and exchange some words with him. When she went back in her store, he followed her back in and shot her dead. He ran, but was eventually chased and killed by the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department. On day 5 of the International Court of Justice hearing, Oman, Qatar, Pakistan, Malaysia and the United Kingdom were expected to deliver their positions. The hearing was called as a result of a request by the UN General Assembly for a general opinion on Israel's occupation of Palestine.

Countries consisting of the UAE, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the Netherlands Ziad Al-Atiyah have already spoken out against Israel's actions during the meeting. Qatar's ambassador spoke to Netherlands pointing out that "In the West Bank, “civilian casualties are not just collateral damage in Israeli attacks, they are the main target" " and that "Israel’s victims are often children.” (Arab News, 2024).

A story of a Tennessee woman struggling to be provided an abortion, after being diagnosed with a potentially life-threatening pregnancy diagnosis, has shown more light on the ways the overturning of Roe v Wade nearly to years ago has affected the medical world surrounding this issue.

Dr. Sarah Osmundson was trying to create a case for a suffering pregnant patient of hers, so she would be able to get an abortion. The fetus was developing without a skull, which could have caused a severe build-up of amniotic fluid that would have become lethal for the woman. Once she presented her case, replies came, and one doctor said they were not "brave enough" (Surana, 2024).

This sparked ProPublica reporters and journalists to do some digging, and doctors in 9 other states where abortion was either banned or had very strict rules, described the struggles with having to choose between their livelihoods and their patients'. In fear of having to do prison time or possibly having their medical license taken away, many doctors have simply denied abortions to their patients, or referred them out of state. This happened a lot, even if the patients were in conditions that could have met the states' strict policies, in fear of meeting the consequences of performing the procedure, the doctors still denied to do them. Cases like this most often happened in less-resourced hospitals that ProPublica interviewed. Since they have less resources, many of those hospitals aren't able to provide legal protection to help someone being prosecuted. This has caused many doctors to deny treating pregnant patients for things other than their pregnancy. For example, an oncologist was reluctant to provide chemotherapy to a pregnant woman who wanted to continue with her therapy, as it could be seen as a way of abortion if the fetus had died from it.

Doctors don't want to lose their license, and anti-abortion laws and lobbyists are very unclear about what should be done to avoid going to prison, or having a bunch of people die, and the problem is not changing.

Family Vlogger Ruby Franke Sentenced for Child Abuse Charges

Ruby Franke and Jodie Hildebrandt worked on one of the many family vlogger channels on Youtube, named "8 Passengers." They mostly used their channel to share parenting advice, though now both have been revealed to have both physically and emotionally abusing their children behind the scenes.

There has been recent discourse about family channels in general in the Youtube community, though now most have made their position clear due to this case. Franke was first arrested in August of 2023, when authorities found one of her sons emaciated with open wounds, and bound with duct tape. The neighbors first found him like this, after he actually escaped Hildebrandt's house and ran to their house, where he asked them to contact the police. When the police entered the home after arresting Hildebrandt, they shortly found one of Franke's daughters in a similar condition, emaciated and locked in a dark closet.

Although the state of the children have not been currently made public, Franke and Hildebrantd were both sentenced to 4 terms of 1-15 years in prison.
