Something that also reminded me of The Giver is how strict the lives of women used to be. This stood out to me making it seem almost as if after you receive your assignment your childhood is past. Reading this scared me a bit, hearing that the Elevens had been watched all year must be a bit frightening to learn. The reason bicycles are given is for the children to grow up and learn about basic life skills. And comfort objects are removed so they can be given to younger children.  What did he notice from the apple? What changed?

Jonas has noticed color in the apple the only reason he couldn't identify what changed was because he was never taught what color is. He and the rest of their society lives in black & white like and old movie, the only reason the Giver could explain it was because of the memories he had seen as a Twelve as well. The quality of color was removed from the citizens vision from either medication or maybe surgery to make their eyes worse. Maybe the government wanted to make everyone colorblind but only see black and white?

Chapter Eight Question No.2
Why did the chief elder mention that the learning in Jonas' assignment required physical pain? How serious is his assignment taken?

In the last chapter Jonas experienced a memory including pain. He recalled that moving his arms hurt, he will only receive pain in his training if the memories consist pain or struggle. In one of his first memories given he was in pain from the experience of a sunburn. So if the memory has pain he will feel it and experience whatever happens in that memory.

A connection that I can make is to Gabriel. Gabriel grew up with sleeping problems and woke up many times in the night. Gabriel was growing up much slower than everyone else. Most babies can talk by the age of one and a half. Luke visited a speech therapist not knowing when he would start talking. After reading halfway through the chapter when Jonas recalls the memory of warfare it reminds me so much of the Hunger games. After Katniss Everdeen had survived the Hunger games she could only think of the traumatic experiences she had faced during her fight to the death. After writing about Jonas' status and re-reading a bit more of the chapter one line really stuck out to me. In the end concluding the chapter the Giver pretty much indicates that Jonas is their community's last hope for being the receiver. This connection shot up in my head about the line in Star Wars "help me Obi-wan Kenobi you're my only hope". This line is very well-known in star wars and I would be extremely surprised if anyone didn't know where that line came from. Finally I can agree with my very first prediction. My very first prediction was thinking that the book might resemble the book Hatchet. These last chapters seem to resemble Hatchet since both stories involve pain, struggle and most importantly, survival. 1. Why are ages considered 'a four' or 'when I was a seven'? Why do they age that way, is it a stage?

Each child has no birthday and is considered to age at the same time with everyone else born in the same year as them. Not only that but they seem to be using that system like apart of growing up and after you reach the stage of being a Twelve age no longer matters.  

2.  Are Nurturing centers the same as Hospitals? Why are people assigned to be birth mothers and others aren't?

Nurturing centers are made for newborn babies to learn basic skills, like sleeping properly and being well fed for around a year. After that year they attend the ceremony of one and are given to their own family unit. They also are made to release any babies that don't fit in with their standards. Identical twins are released since they simply can't deal with two identical people.

4. What does "being released" mean? Does it mean to kill? It makes me think that they go to a facility like a prison or they can be contaminated and killed.

Being released means being killed, they have the word murder but use a different name for it. To make it sound less frightening. They also claim that they put them into an "elsewhere" also that is simply a lie. 

5. If all of the children are given to families at the same time, how are the families aware of their birthdays? Are birthdays celebrated?

Birthdays were removed to have the sameness. It makes sense a bit since if one person is singled out from the rest others could become envious especially children. 

Chapter Two:
 
2. What if people are not satisfied with their jobs as they grow up and begin to have a change of heart?

Since there has been camera surrounding their community they watch you your entire life to see if you do have a change of heart until your a Twelve. Not only that but they could apply to be released elsewhere not knowing what it entirely means. 

4. Who decided  in their society that no freedom is a perfect Utopian place? Why are the rules so limited on what people can do?  

I guess the people controlling the government back and back and back chose to rule out everyone's differences and pain that anyone suffered. And many people have different opinion's on what a Utopian society seems to resemble as. 

Chapter Three:
 
1. What did he notice from the apple? What changed?

The reason Jonas couldn't pinpoint what exactly changed when he saw the apple was the fact that he saw color. He couldn't describe it since he had never learned about color before and it didn't change shape or anything. 

2. Why is wearing ribbons in your hair such a strict rule? It seems like the government is making everything in life a necessity to accomplish perfectly. 

Females wearing ribbons in their hair was a rule made with the stage becoming a seven. You have it for only a year and move on once you become an eight. Boys on the other hand didn't have accessories or hair ties since they had short hair. 

3. If there are so many rules in their "Utopia", would there be any crimes?

Since their society is so strict it seems like there wouldn't be any crimes, there's even a curfew at night. And because of this rule it makes sense why  Jonas did not want to be seen by the night crew when he was escaping. 

4. Can children be released if they break too many rules?

It mentions somewhere in the book that if a child breaks 3 infraction/rules they are released. Almost like strikes at a baseball game. 

5. How long has their society been like this? How many generations?

Since mentioning the phrase "back and back and back" the amount of generations that have lived with this type of society could have been at least three to five generations. 

Chapter Four: 

1. Why are children meant to give the Old baths? Is privacy not a term used in The Giver? Are people allowed to volunteer to give the Old and babies baths?

It seems that their community is very open and honest with each other. Not being able to lie and sharing feelings at the dinner table already speaks for itself. So it doesn't entirely surprise me but still is gross. 

2. Is there a scheduled date for each person to be released? Are they meant to be released if they cause trouble? 

You can be released if you break too many rules although since nobody has a birthday and people have retirements after being old enough. They might lose count of their age since they no longer count it after the age of twelve. But they do seem to finish being released ceremonies fairly quickly so it makes sense if they did become released all in the same day. 

4. Why are children at such a young age given mandatory volunteer hours?

Having enough volunteer hours is the same for high school you need to have enough volunteer hours to graduate or in their case receive a life long assignment. 

Chapter Five: 

1. Did Jonas have feelings for Fiona?

Jonas did catch feelings for Fiona and eventually got stirrings for her. In the movie it provides more information on their love life although  the pills are made to remove the feelings of love. 

2. Why do people need to take pills to forget dreams that consist of strong feelings. 

After hearing all about sameness it seems like they don't want love or strong feelings because they are afraid of anymore chaos. They might fear people taking advantage of love and using against people, they seem to be sticking on the safe side but end up ruining their society. 

3. Why are the pills taken until you reach the house of Old?

I guess once you reach the house of the old people don't seem to care as much and are on the verge of being released anyway. 

4. Why are sharing dreams and feelings so important?

Like I mentioned before their community is very open and doesn't seem to like secrets the children in their society is taught to be open so they don't get into hobbies of lying and keeping secrets. 

Chapter six: 

1. Who would replace a child? They lost their first child and replaced him with a child with the exact same name? Who would ever become so lifeless and feel nothing by losing a four year old?

Their community has no feelings or emotions to really actually care for loss or replacing any children. They would handle the job no problem. It seems after the crowd echos their name they move on and completely forget. 

2.  Why does the community want to numb their strong feelings of loss, of love, of desires? Who decided to make their life so lifeless or robot-like?

Personally the government is a chicken. They are afraid of every possibility that might dent their society. But the fact that they are so backed up with security everywhere it seems like they can handle any situation like that. 

Chapter Seven: 

1.  Why are each Eleven's childhood technically given when you become a Twelve? Do they not consider adolescence a big part of their childhood?

The government takes advantage of their adolescence to let them take their training throughout their adolescence and once they reach 16 or older. Depending on their assignment should be prepared for working. 

3. Why was Jonas skipped? Did the chief elder make that mistake on purpose? Did the elder find out what Jonas saw in the apple? 

The chief elder did make a mistake and realized what she did although she didn't want to stop halfway through the program and redo it. She would make a fool of herself. 

4. Is Jonas going to receive his assignment last? Is he going to be released? 

Jonas did receive his assignment last but was chosen/selected with the most important role in the entire community. 

5. Is their community all white? Does their community have no multicultural groups?

Since the society has strictly forced sameness they might has released everyone else of color, or maybe they wanted everybody to be the same and not need to struggle with differences of race or culture. 

Chapter Eight: 

1. What is a Receiver of memories? If it is such an important assignment then what is the assignments purpose?

The receiver of memories is rarely assigned. Only one person every few decades is chosen to be the receiver. Not only that but they must carry a burden. Since people have no ability to learn about history or remember, the receiver carries the burdens of all the memories any one had experienced before their society. Now not all of it is bad. It opened Jonas' eyes and made him grow to become more and more curious. 


2. Why did the chief elder mention that the learning in Jonas' assignment required physical pain? How serious is his assignment taken?

Since Jonas needs to experience all memories. Some memories require pain. For example a bee sting, you can't fully experience a bee sting without pain. A sun burn, feeling that pain is required to keep the memory. 

3. Is his role to record the citizens dreams and emotions, or is there more to his assignment?

That's pretty much his whole assignment although the book only talks about how his training goes. He never completes training or learns about how to train another he simply only has received memories. 

Chapter Nine: 

1. Why is it that he is noticing from his close friends and family, why the hesitation?

His close friends and family are probably shocked that he was selected out of everybody to be the receiver. The tight also fear what might happen to Jonas especially since the last receiver was technically a "failure". Basically they might assume that Jonas will disappear as well. 

2. Why are the "parents" so robot-like do they not celebrate important events? Receiving that assignment is such a big deal, why not celebrate?

Ideally in their society nothing is celebrated unless it is a release ceremony for the old and even that is quite dark. They don't have holidays maybe PD days but nothing anymore exciting. 

3.  Why is Jonas now allowed to lie? What secrets will he learn? Will he find out what being released means?

Jonas is not supposed to tell anything about his training, he is meant to keep whatever he learns a secret. So if anyone asks about his training I guess the purpose of him being able to lie is to make up something. 

4. Why is the book called the Giver if Jonas is technically the Receiver?

The book is called the Giver, since it is named after Jonas' trainer for his assignment. The Giver is the one who changes Jonas' whole life. 

Chapter Ten & Eleven:

2. Is  all of Jonas'  training  receiving The Giver's memories?

I presume that the Giver needs to transmit all of his memories to Jonas but he also might need to inform him on how to train the next receiver whenever they are chosen. 

5. Does the Giver know what being released means? If he has all memories does that mean he has memories of people being released?

The Giver was the one who showed Jonas what being released is, he has full access to see and watch every single release ceremony. 

Chapter Twelve:


2. Why did the people back then decide to have the sameness over seeing color? What went through their mind to lead them to that conclusion?

I'm not entirely sure but maybe having a favourite color might change people's perspectives on different subjects and thoughts. Removing color was just another process to make everyone the same. 

4. Based on hearing that the ability to see beyond is seeing color. They definitely did not learn about colors in school but did they learn about shades like grey, black and white? 

Since Jonas had no idea what color meant or was I presume he never had the chance to learn about shades in school at all. They never seemed to question any of it since no one brought it up. 

Chapter Thirteen: 

1.  Why did the Giver want to show Jonas the experience of war? Is he trying to show what the world was like before their society? Was he trying to stop Jonas from being curious about the past?

Showing Jonas the memory of war was not trying to stop him from anything it is simply a piece of his training. He must also experience all of the Givers memories to be completely trained so it would have happened sooner or later. 


3.  Why does Jonas only see colors for an instant? Is he trying to fight his color blindness? Does he know that you can mix colors?

Jonas can only manage to see colors for a glimpse is because his eyesight is readjusting to this big change. His whole eyesight won't change overnight it will definitely take time. 

Chapter Fourteen: 

1. Could Jonas give any memory to anyone? Do you think he'll try giving more memories?

He seems to only be capable of giving memories to those with pale gray eyes. Other people simply don't possess the ability to process memories. Having pale eyes makes them even more unique. 

2.  Why can't Jonas and The Giver at least try to bend the rules about how the population having shared memories?

In the end Jonas breaks about 3 rules 
a) stealing Gabriel
b) taking his father's bike
c) running away 
 
The only reason Jonas broke these rules was because he seemed to be leaving his society and leaving all of his memories to the community to restore faith and make everyone normal again. 

3. It seems that anyone with pale gray eyes can have to ability of the receiver. The Giver has pale eyes just like Jonas and the only reason Gabriel could've received the memory is if he had pale eyes too. Is that true?

It isn't proven but everyone in the book with pale eyes does possess the power to become the next receiver. Not only that but in the movie everyone possesses the same birthmark on their forearm. 

5. Gabriel seems to be a normal baby waking up in the night. Why is that unusual if all babies nowadays do the same?

Maybe since people who apply for children aren't necessarily trained on how to take care of them. They wouldn't be taught what allergies a child would have or how to deal with 3 hours of sleep from babies waking up at night. 

Chapter Fifteen:
 
1. Does their society not have weekends? If their community is so lifeless do they have any days to relax?
 
I think in a specific part of the novel there is a part where they have a day off to enjoy themselves. Lily has a picnic with her daycare and Jonas goes to see Asher after receiving the memory of warfare. 

3. How long do memories seem in the memory? Could the memories take hours to give but only seconds in the Annex room?

Jonas does mention a few specific times when he mentions that the memory felt like it lasted hours but only took a few minutes in the annex. 

Chapter Sixteen: 

1. Why was Jonas unaware of birthdays? Is he curious when he was born? Does the Giver know his own birthday? Will the hall of records have dated birthdays?

The hall of records would definitely have everyone's date of birth to keep track of their age, but he never found out about birthdays until he received the memory. Having sameness in their community would mean no one is singled out for one day a year, everybody their age has their own ceremony together. 

2. Does Jonas have any idea what throwing out the pills will do to his body? Will it change his life for the better?

I'm sure Jonas is aware that the stirrings will return but maybe he might not think that he might see colors much more vividly instead of medications ruining it all. 

3. Does Jonas have a feeling that the wanting he had for Fiona is similar to the feeling of love he had experienced? Can he see the similarities between the two emotions?

Jonas would have certainly picked up on the fact that both feelings have the same feeling of warmth. He might have noticed, but love for  family and love for people outside your family is very different. 

4. How is the feeling of love known as obsolete, or a generalized word? It is a feeling that everyone should feel but I'm assuming those pills taken everyday remove that feeling so they seem to be more lifeless and robot-like. 

Since their population has no emotions why would they ever care about love? Since it is such a strong emotion why should anyone in their community know about love or what it feels like?

Chapter Seventeen: 

3. How many memories does Jonas have now after a year? Does the Giver feel mentally much better after giving away so many memories?

The Giver definitely does feel much better now after having company everyday for a whole year. But it must make him remember Rosemary much more since he did mention that Jonas reminded him of her. 

4. Does Jonas' father release children? Does he know where they go?

Jonas' father conducts releasing anybody at all ages specifically newborn babies or ones. Jonas' father has a process to do when it comes to releasing someone. First he injects, then waits until they stiffen and put them in a box. The next step confuses me but once he puts the child in the box he deposits it somewhere. Jonas in the book did mention that it looked like a trash chute.

Chapter Eighteen: 

1. Is everyone in their community straight? It seems like so many people are opening up about themselves does anybody in their community even consider the possibility? Especially since today everyone is so open, if they're in the future then it must be normal right? 

I'm predicting that since all of their memory was erased no one knows anything about being different in that way. And since sameness is so strictly enforced they might have changed everything in that matter.

2.  Does their community have graveyards? Where would they put the remainder of someone after they die? Do they have a special facility for that or do they have an area for Graves, a hidden place?

After watching the release ceremony of the new child they do not have graveyards they simply put the baby in a trash chute. So technically the trash chute is considered their graveyard. 

3. Why did Rosemary release herself? Could she not bear the pain that she was given? She was full aware of the pain she would feel but could she not take it? Was releasing herself a way of quitting?

She couldn't seem to want to feel any sadness like the memories had provided, so releasing herself was a way of quitting. 

Chapter Nineteen: 
1. Will Jonas question his father about what happened to the smaller twin? Will he feel anger and sadness towards his father and the awful things he's done?

After watching the release Jonas did not want to return home after seeing what his father had done. He simply couldn't process it  and found his father as a liar. 

2. Do you think Jonas will try and change their society? After finding out that being a nurturer is such a horrid assignment. Will he change things because he has emotions that give him an instinct to make things right?

One thing is for sure, if he had not seen what his father had done at the release of the child he would have not taken Gabriel with him while he escaped. If not he would have left still thinking that Gabriel was going to be sent elsewhere. 

3. Will he find out where the deposits go? Where are all the people are in boxes? What will he do to make things right?

In the end Jonas has no idea where any of the trash is deposited along with the boxes of people but it might just be a big pile just like how we get rid of garbage. 

Chapter Twenty: 

1. How will he pretend to fall into the river? Will the search community look for his body or bike?

Even after escaping without being seen, the search planes still went out to look for him for many days. They checked every few hours to find Jonas. Maybe the plan didn't go as planned. 

2. How quickly will their plan work? Does it take a few hours? A few days?

Jonas' plan took about an hour to settle and leave his community but running away from the planes took many days even weeks. 

3.  What will happen when someone finds him? How could he escape from being caught?

In the book Jonas didn't end up being caught but since he had broken so many rules he would have been released. As for Gabriel he would be released as well since he was supposed to be already. 

4. Will he take Gabriel with him if he's going to be released if he can't manage to sleep soundly?

Jonas did take Gabriel along with him since he couldn't bear to imagine leaving Gabriel behind knowing what would happen to him. What his father would do to him. 

Chapter 21, 22, & 23: 

4. Why didn't he say goodbye to Fiona? He really seemed to love her and he just leaves with no trail at all. It surprised me that he didn't at least say goodbye since he's the main character and should have maybe even brought her with him. But it does make sense why he didn't take her.
