Quran:

Surah Al-Imran (3:45) - "Behold! the angels said: 'O Mary! Allah giveth thee glad tidings of a Word from Him: his name will be Christ Jesus, the son of Mary, held in honor in this world and the Hereafter and of (the company of) those nearest to Allah.'"

Surah An-Nisa (4:157-158) - "That they said (in boast), 'We killed Christ Jesus the son of Mary, the Messenger of Allah';- but they killed him not, nor crucified him, but so it was made to appear to them, and those who differ therein are full of doubts, with no (certain) knowledge, but only conjecture to follow, for of a surety they killed him not. Nay, Allah raised him up unto Himself; and Allah is Exalted in Power, Wise."

Surah Al-Maidah (5:110) - "Then will Allah say: 'O Jesus the son of Mary! Recount My favor to thee and to thy mother. Behold! I strengthened thee with the holy spirit, so that thou didst speak to the people in childhood and in maturity. Behold! I taught thee the Book and Wisdom, the Law and the Gospel.'"

Surah Maryam (19:16-33) - This section narrates the story of Jesus's birth, his miracles, and his message.

Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:72-75) - "They do blaspheme who say: 'Allah is Christ the son of Mary.' But said Christ: 'O Children of Israel! worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord.' Whoever joins other gods with Allah,- Allah will forbid him the garden, and the Fire will be his abode. There will for the wrong-doers be no one to help. They do blaspheme who say: Allah is one of three in a Trinity: for there is no god except One Allah. If they desist not from their word (of blasphemy), verily a grievous penalty will befall the blasphemers among them."

Hadith:

Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 55, Hadith 643: Narrated Abu Huraira: "The Prophet said, 'By Him in Whose Hands my soul is, surely (Jesus,) the son of Mary will soon descend amongst you and will judge mankind justly (as a Just Ruler); he will break the Cross and kill the pigs and there will be no Jizya (i.e. taxation taken from non-Muslims). Money will be in abundance so that nobody will accept it, and a single prostration to Allah (in prayer) will be better than the whole world and whatever is in it.'"

Sahih Muslim, Book 30, Hadith 5836: Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: "I am most akin to Jesus Christ among the whole of mankind, and all the Prophets are of different mothers but belong to one religion and no Prophet was raised between me and Jesus."

Why do Muslims believe in life after death?

The main source of authority for Muslims is the Qur’an.

Muslims believe that Allah is in charge of their lives and decides how long they will live.

Nor can a soul die except by Allah’s leave. The term being fixed as by writing.

— Qur’an 3:145

People’s deeds will be taken into account on the Day of Judgement. The Qur’an states that the good will receive reward, while the bad will receive punishment.

Of the good that they do nothing will be rejected of them; for Allah knoweth well those that do right. Those who reject faith – neither their possessions nor their (numerous) progeny will avail them aught against Allah: they will be companions of the fire, dwelling therein forever.

— Qur’an 3:115-3:116

The final judgment will take place at the sound of a trumpet when the world will disappear and the dead will be raised.

Muslims believe that each person has two angels who record their good and bad deeds. These records will be read and Allah will judge each person.

To every soul will be paid in full the fruits of its deeds; and Allah knows best all that they do.

— Qur’an 39:70

Muslims believe that Heaven will be a “garden of bliss”. People will lie on jewelled couches, remain eternally young, drink wine from fountains and be served fine foods.

Muslims believe that Hell is full of smoke, fire and boiling water. People will rage with thirst and there will be no way to escape the heat.

Belief in life after death is central to the meaning and purpose of most Muslims’ lives. Many Muslims believe that they are on Earth for a relatively short time. During this time they are preparing themselves for eternal life after death.

Key fact

Muslims view this life as a test and try to do as many good deeds as they can.
