Trenches were long, deep ditches dug for protection in WWI warfare. Due to the unsanitary conditions, diseases such as dysentery, typhoid fever, cholera, and trench foot spread greatly among the soldiers fighting in close proximity. Around 35,000 miles of trenches were dug during the war, and this type of warfare resulted in the slow advancement of troops and many casualties.
