KUALA LUMPUR:  There has been a disturbing rise in brutal and sadistic crimes in recent months.

One of the most shocking recent cases was the murder of teacher Istiqomah Ahmad Rozi, whose decapitated body was discovered in a trash bin near a drain in Kampung Rimau, Johor.

In July, the nation was shocked by the death of Nur Farah Kartini Abdullah, 25, a graduate from Sultan Idris Education University (UPSI), who was killed by a police officer.

Shortly after the discovery of Istiqomah's body, news broke of another tragedy—a family of three who perished in a murder-cum-arson in Kampung Paya Redan, Pagoh, last week.

One of the most infamous cases in recent history is of course the murder of Mongolian beauty Altantuya Shariibuu, 28, who disappeared in Kuala Lumpur in 2006. Police discovered bone fragments, later confirmed to be hers, in a forest in Puncak Alam, Shah Alam in October that year.

No plea was recorded as murder cases fall under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

SEPANG, Selangor: Two people - both aged 19 - were charged on Thursday (Jul 10) with murder and abetment by a Malaysian court over the death of a 20-year-old university student in Cyberjaya last month. 

Maniishapriet Kaur Akhara, a physiotherapy student from the University of Cyberjaya, was found dead in her condominium unit in the Sepang district of Selangor on the morning of Jun 24, with injuries on her body, reported local media.  

At the Sepang Magistrate Court on Thursday, M Sri Darvien was charged with murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty or jail of between 30 and 40 years and at least 12 strokes of the cane, if convicted.

According to the charge sheet, Darvien was accused of murdering Maniishapriet between 9.11pm and 11.31pm on Jun 23 at Block A of Mutiara Ville, Free Malaysia Today reported. 

After searching for three hours, Ang's family discovered the naked body of Ang at an empty house in a nearby desolated area. A metre-long piece of wood with nails had been stuffed into her private parts, rupturing her inner organs, and an autopsy report confirmed that Ang was sexually assaulted by her killer(s) before her death, and it was also speculated that at least eight people were involved in her murder based on the teeth marks left on her body.

In spite of extensive police investigations and public calls for justice, the murder of Ang remains unsolved to this day. The rape and murder of Ang May Hong remains as one of the most horrific murders left unsolved in Malaysia.^[1]

The Court of Appeal, led by Judge Hadhariah Syed Ismail, overturned the initial 18-year prison sentences imposed by the Kuala Lumpur High Court, reinstating the mandatory death penalty under Section 302 of the Penal CodJudge Hadhariah stated in her ruling that the three-judge panel found that the five students had taken turns pressing a steam iron on the body of the deceased, including his private parts, while the last student, Abdoul Hakeem, was complicit in inciting and instructing the other five to do so.

The six students are Muhammad Akmal Zuhairi Azmal, Muhammad Azamuddin Mad Sofi, Muhammad Najib Mohd Razi, Muhammad Afif Najmudin Azahat, Mohamad Shobirin Sabri, and Abdoul Hakeem Mohd Ali.e.

One of her clients was state assemblyman Mazlan Idris, who agreed to pay her a substantial sum of RM2.5 million in the hopes that her witchcraft could boost his political career. As part of their arrangement, he provided RM500,000 in cash and offered several land titles as collateral for the remaining balance.

On 13th June 2003, Canny Ong, a 28-year-old IT analyst from the United States, was abducted from a parking lot of a shopping centre in Bangsar after attending a dinner with her family and friends earlier that evening. CCTV footage shows Ong was kidnapped by a man who was later identified as Ahmad Najib Aris, 40.

Between 1 and 5 am on 14th June 2003, Ahmad Najib reportedly sexually assaulted Ong in her car, which he had left parked under an under-construction flyover near Taman Datuk Harun in Jalan Klang Lama. Ong was later killed with two knife stabs before her body was stuffed into a narrow drain hole along the highway. To ensure she was hidden, Ahmad Najib had covered Ong with two large tyres filled with cement.

As if that's not enough, Ahmad Najib returned to the crime scene the next day and set fire to Ong's body. The fire quickly caught the attention of a manager of the highway construction site who called the police. Five days later, Ahmad Najib was arrested following a mountain of evidence found which linked him to the murder.

After 13 years on death row and fighting to appeal his case, Ahmad Najib was executed by hanging in 2016.

inAfter a long-drawn trial process from 29 January 2018 to 2 November 2021, the Kuala Lumpur High Court found the six main perpetrators guilty of manslaughter instead of murder, and sentenced them to 18 years' imprisonment each, while the remaining 12 were sentenced to three years in jail each for causing hurt to Zulfarhan. However, upon the prosecution's appeal on 23 July 2024, the Court of Appeal found the six main offenders guilty of murder and sentenced them to death, after finding that the murder itself was among the "rarest of the rare" cases and the six had exhibited a blatant disregard for human life, and hence the death penalty was the only appropriate sentence for the six. The respective three-year jail terms of the 12 other accomplices were raised to four years for each of them.

While Malaysia lacks a specific law defining cyberbullying, existing legislation like the Communications and Multimedia Act (CMA) 1998 and the Penal Code are used to address online harms. 

KUALA LUMPUR - Two people have been brought before the sessions and magistrate’s courts over communication offences on TikTok linked to the death of 30-year-old social media influencer A. Rajeswary, better known as Esha.

The case is said to be the first of its kind involving a cyber-bullying victim.

Ms Esha was found dead in a condominium unit in Setapak on July 5, a day after lodging a police report at the Dang Wangi police station over threats made against her.

KUALA LUMPUR: The family of the late firefighter Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim has filed a notice to withdraw their appeal for committal proceedings against former Attorney-General Tan Sri Tommy Thomas.

Muhammad Adib's father, Mohd Kassim Abdul Hamid, had filed two appeals in the Court of Appeal, among them against a High Court's decision which allowed Thomas' application to set aside the committal proceedings filed against him.

According to the statement, the firm filed the notice to withdraw the appeal last May 31, following which the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) withdrew the application for leave to appeal to the Federal Court.

The AGC, representing Thomas , had appealed against the decision of the Court of Appeal on Feb 8 which ruled that the coroner hearing the inquest into Muhammad Adib's death had jurisdiction to issue leave to commence committal proceedings against Thomas.

"In this regard, the family of the late Muhammad Adib considers that the process on the contempt of court proceedings against Thomas and the Attorney General's Chambers has been disposed of and is over, and hopes the society will allow the family start a new life.

"At the same time, it should be noted that the settlement at this appeal stage did not in any way tamper with or alter the decision and findings by the Coroner's Court on Sept 27, 2019, which confirmed that the late Adib was beaten to death (although the killer had yet to be found) and that his death was also contributed by the failure of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) to control the riot," according to the statement.

It also stated that the grounds of the 52-page judgment by the Coroner had never been overruled by any higher court and thus, it remained an authoritative finding of fact.

The law firm said the stand by Muhammad Adib's family to withdraw the appeal for committal proceeding did not mean that the search for Muhammad Adib's killer could not be continued by the police as there is no legal time limit for criminal investigation.

"The fight to seek justice for a government employee killed while on duty to maintain peace can also be continued by any concerned civil society, the public, as well as non-governmental organisations," it said.

On Nov 29, 2021, Muhammad Adib's family received RM1.5 million in compensation from the government over the tragedy that befell the firefighter, who was a member of the Emergency Medical Rescue Services unit from the Subang Jaya Fire and Rescue Station.

He sustained serious injuries during a commotion at the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in USJ 25, Subang Jaya on Nov 27, 2018 and died on Dec 17 after 21 days at the National Heart Institute.

On Sept 27, 2019, the Coroner's Court established that Muhammad Adib died after he was assaulted by two or three unidentified people during the riot.

Meanwhile, lawyer Aidil Khalid, representing Mohd Kassim, when contacted by Bernama, said the AGC withdrew its appeal in the Federal Court yesterday.

Selangor Police Chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said two local suspects, aged 25 and 40, have been arrested.

Both suspects, believed to be members of a secret society, were arrested in Klang.

“We also believe this is not a random incident, with the motive believed to be due to a dispute between secret societies.

“We are investigating to determine whether the dispute is over territory or drug activities or for other reasons,” he said during a press conference today.

Huseein added that the police are also still investigating whether the incident involved the services of a hired killer or was carried out by members of the secret society.

On June 20, a man was shot dead in front of a motorcycle shop in Taman Meru Utama.

The local man, aged 46, was found face down and covered in blood in the driver’s seat of a four-wheel-drive vehicle.

A Malaysian Chinese primary school teacher and her eldest son were found dead at their home in a suspected robbery.

This murder case was discovered around 5 AM today (12 June) at Taman Rambai Mutiara, Bukit Rambai in the suburbs of Melaka City.

The deceased were the 51-year-old Wen Qiu Yan (transliteration) and her 21-year-old eldest son Lin Wen Kai (transliteration).

According to investigations, at the time of the incident, the deceased’s second son had stayed out overnight the previous night.

He returned home at 5 AM to prepare to drive his younger brother to school, when he discovered the murder case.

Police Launch Investigation into Family Deaths

The victims were reportedly found dead in the living room, while the youngest son was injured in the back and sent to the hospital for treatment, with bloodstains scattered throughout the scene.

Police arrived at the scene around 6 AM to conduct investigations.

Local MCA leaders and a friend of the deceased also arrived at the scene to understand the situation.

Wen and her husband had three sons, and after her husband, who worked as a chef, passed away from illness six months ago, the female deceased lived in the house with her three sons.

Sathiaraj, who was 27 at the time of the offence, was found guilty of murder and sentenced to death in August 2022, in addition to a 13-year jail term and five strokes of the cane for the second charge of rape.^[2] Sathiaraj's appeal was dismissed by the Malaysian Court of Appeal in February 2024,^[3][4] but his death sentence was commuted to 40 years in prison and 12 strokes of the cane by the Federal Court of Malaysia in January 2025.^[5]

SHAH ALAM: It was greed that drove lawyer N. Pathmanabhan to kill cosmetics millionaire Datuk Sosilawati Lawiya in a brutal manner three years ago.

The High Court today found that the accused’s unethical decision in acting for two opposing sides in a land deal, as well as acquiring interests in the transactions, had found himself caught in a web of deceit.

Judge Datuk Akhtar Tahir, in his brief 15–page judgment which took 50 minutes to read, said Pathmanabhan had appeared for Sosilawati as the seller in a land deal, and had also acted for the buyer, which was Datuk Abdul Rahman Palil, a former assemblyman for Sementa.

“The accused’s actions were not only unethical but had also compromised his impartiality. He appeared for both Sosilawati and Rahman Palil in the same deal and by doing so, he was caught between the devil and the deep blue sea,” he said.

“On one hand was Sosilawati, a well known entrepreneur, and on the other was Rahman Palil, who was a powerful politician according to the accused.”

He said when pushed to the corner, Pathmanabhan took an easy route of eliminating one of the two and unfortunately, it was Sosilawati, as he was unable to honour a cheque issued to her.

“The rest of the persons accompanying Sosilawati were just at the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Akhtar said this before sentencing Pathmanabhan and his three farm hands T. Thilaiyalagan, 22, R. Matan, 23, and R. Kathavarayan, 33, to death.

He found the four guilty of murdering Sosilawati, 47, bank officer Noorhisham Mohamad, 38, lawyer Ahmad Kamil Abdul Karim, 32, and driver Kamaruddin Shansuddin, 44, at Ladang Gadong, Lot 2001 in Jalan Tanjong Layang, Tanjung Sepat, Banting, between 8.30pm and 9.45pm on Aug 30, 2010.

The judge said Pathmanabhan had in his defence denied meeting Sosilawati on the night of the incident at the farm and this was supported by Thilaiyalagan and Matan’s testimonies.

“He had distanced himself from whatever had befallen them (the victims),” he said.

“To me, his denial runs to counter the evidence of Sosilawati’s daughter that she was specifially informed by her mother that she was going to Banting to meet the accused over the clearance of two cheques.”

Sosilawati’s daughter, Akhtar said, had no axe to grind with the first accused, nor had the wives of the other three victims when they said their husbands had followed Sosilawati on a business matter.

“The names thrown by the defence of Rahman Palil and others, known to Sosilawati, were mere red herrings. These names did crop up during investigation and the fact that they were not called as witnesses shows that they had no role to play in this case,” he said.

“The telecommunication records (of the victims) also charted their journey right to the farm belonging to Pathmanabhan and the defence made no attempt to discredit this evidence.”

The judge also said he found that a witness, Siti Hamidah Karnax, an Indonesian maid who was working on the farm, to be a credible witness, who testified she saw a woman and three men on the farm the night of the incident.

(Siti Hamidah had in her evidence said she heard a woman scream and a fire burning as high as the neighbouring oil palm trees).

Akthar said the four accused failed to explain the items belonging to the victims as being found as a result of the information given by Thilaiyalagan and Kathavarayan.

“The informants worked for Pathmanabhan and since Sosilawati went to see him at the farm, what happened thereafter certainly could be inferred as being instructions from Pathmanabhan,” he said.

“There was also no explanation given by the accused persons as to the finding of the blood and human bones on the farm.”

He said Kathavarayan, who had turned against his three co–accused and implicated them, had carefully crafted his version to portray his innocence and manipulated his evidence to suit him.

Akhtar said Kathavarayan’s testimony claiming he saw Sosilawati a week after the incident was also made up.

“Kathavarayan had also said Pathmanabhan had prepared them (he, Thilaiyalagan and Matan) on the eventuality of being arrested and questioned by Sosilawati and company."

"This shows the misfortune that had befallen Sosilawati and company on Aug 30, 2010, at the farm,” he said.

“The fact that there was a meeting to discuss their disappearance indicated that all four accused were involved in an earlier plan which they had carried out on Aug 30, 2010, by killing and disposing of the remains of Sosilawati and company (bodies were burnt and ashes thrown in the river).”

The judge said this was a case unlike others as no bodies recovered.

He, however, found no reason why the four accused could not be convicted merely because no bodies were recovered as he found the four men to have murdered Sosilawati and company.

“All the evidence in this case recouped together puts to shade the saying that dead men tell no tales. In this case, the dead men and one woman shouted at the top of their lungs through silent evidence, a tale of dishonesty and deception, precipitated by sheer and naked greed, orchestrated by a man whose profession preached trustworthiness and honour.

“Their victims are not only the poor and desolate but also the high and mighty. This case is evidence of such gruesome plot executed by a rogue professional and his cohorts with extreme brutality,” said Akhtar.

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysia Computer Emergency Response Team (MyCert) reported an increase in data breach incidents in Malaysia in the first quarter of the year.

"Data breach incidents are growing in Malaysia with a nearly 29% increase this quarter, underscoring the need for better security measures to ensure national security and public trust," said MyCert.

According to its latest Cyber Incident Quarterly Summary report released on June 10, MyCert received 195 incidents reports on data breach incidents in Q1 2025, compared to 151 in Q4 2024.

No specific details were provided. It shared that "high-profile breaches" often involve massive datasets with personal identifier information (PII) such as full name, IC number, financial details and addresses being compromised. 

MyCert, which operates under Cybersecurity Malaysia, said it is also observing a trend of perpetrators stealing and holding sensitive data hostage until the affected organisation pays a ransom.

However, it said reports on ransomware incidents have decreased to 25% in Q1 2025, with 12 incidents compared to 16 in the last quarter.

It also shared that businesses are the "most impacted by ransomware incidents" in Malaysia with Active Directory servers being primary targets.

Fraud incidents continue to target both end users and organisations. MyCert said it has become the preferred method of criminals due to lack of awareness among the public.

It reported handling a total of 1,126 fraud cases this quarter, a 2% increase from last quarter. 

The top fraud incident is phishing with 719 cases, representing 68% of all cases. 

Overall, MyCert recorded 1,657 incidents in Q1 2025 in a number of categories including denial of service, malicious code and intrusion attempts; marking a 7% increase from 1,550 cases in the previous quarter.
