Melati and Isabel campaign against plastic bags in Bali, highlighting their environmental harm. Plastic bags, indestructible yet disposable, pollute oceans and release harmful dioxins when burned. Their activism includes petitions, beach cleanups, and a hunger strike, leading to the governor's commitment to a plastic bag-free Bali by 2018. Isabel encourages young activists, emphasizing perseverance despite challenges, stating, "It's going to be worth it. Kids is the future."

'Folded Map' is an art project initiated by Chicago-based activist Tonika Johnson that aims to reveal and analyze the segregation of the city by taking and displaying photographs of geographically identical but socioeconomically diverse neighborhoods on Chicago's North and south sides. The project shows the inner divisions of the city and visually provokes public reflection on racial and economic inequality. The influence of the project has aroused the attention of the media and widespread social discussion, and successfully presented social issues to the public in the form of art.

For Project Step 1, I explored how graphic design can advocate for freedom of speech, focusing on Shepard Fairey’s “HOPE” poster and Barbara Kruger’s “Your Body is a Battleground.” Initially, I felt enthusiastic about the intersection of design and political activism, excited to analyze how these artworks communicate powerful messages. During the project, I delved deeply into the design elements and political implications of both pieces, discovering their significant roles in promoting social change.

The project went well in terms of selecting impactful artworks and providing a detailed analysis of their political messages. However, I faced challenges with scope limitations and time management, spending more time on analysis than planned, which affected the overall timeline.

From this experience, I learned the importance of a broader contextual exploration and effective time management. In the future, I will broaden my research scope by dedicating additional time to understanding the broader context and improve time management by creating detailed project schedules. This approach will help me provide more comprehensive analyses and manage project components more effectively.
