Dr. Graham was critical of the common diet and morality of Americans in the 1800s. Bread, in particular, contained chemical additives that Graham hypothesized related to sexual drive, which he considered immoral.

To improve American lives, Graham sought to rid Americans of such immorality. Graham tinkered with his own recipe for bread. This recipe resulted in a cracker quite different than the one we know today. Relatively, Graham also preached a healthy lifestyle, which focused on a vegetarianism and purity.

Sylvester Graham was born on July 5, 1794 as the youngest of 17. His father, a clergyman, died when Sylvester was a toddler. A couple years later, his mother was said to go clinically insane. Years later, Sylvester Graham became a Presbyterian clergymen, like his father.
Behind the Cracker

Graham's motivation behind the creation of the cracker is a strange one. Graham hypothesized that the chemical additive that was put in bread caused one to behave immorally. Being against such actions, Graham invented his cracker to rid society of such desires and actions.
