Then she used books to supplement so that they could find answers to questions that they had. <br><br>They used the pictures in non-fiction books to make observations and learn new things about animals. </div>]]></description>

Oral Communication (literacy check) and independent reading <br>2. Benefits: Hands on activity in which students had the opportunity to test and modify their project; "accountable talk" to create a positive, respectful environment <br>Difficulties: Ensure there are enough books at each students' reading level that encapsulates the necessary content. This could also privilege certain voices, such as students who are familiar with the vocabulary and put English Language Learners at a disadvantage.<br>3. Yes, more resourced schools have the capacity to acquire these materials. However, it might be difficult to find the teachers who have the background knowledge to teach these topics. Thus, the students need teachers who take the initiative to do their own research to jog their memory and become experts in the specific subject area. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The Pond was a benefit for the students as the students were allowed to have hands on experience caring for and looking at animals. <br><br>Ms. Newton allowed for discussions so that students could ask her questions. Sometimes she did not know the answers to the questions, so she would look them up.<br><br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>1)  Ms. Woolf used text based research to investigate and study animals. Students explored animals through books, pamphlets, a computer based program, and through sharing their own questions. Then students were placed in research groups to share information and then created books about their animal. Students learned about features of non-fiction texts.<br>2) Benefits: able to use text in different mediums, variety of ways to explore content, group work to create books and publishing party to share with other groups.<br>Drawbacks: not based on real world investigation or observation, text language for ENL students<br>3) Yes, for the most part classrooms have access to books or can go to the public library for non-fiction texts or articles can be printed by the teacher</div>]]></description>
