In 1948, the Soviets had installed left-wing governments in the countries of eastern Europe that had been liberated by the Red Army. The British and American people feared the permanent Soviet domination of eastern Europe, and the threat of Soviet-influenced communist parties coming to power in the democracies of western Europe. The Soviets were determined to maintain control of eastern Europe in order to safeguard against any possible renewed threat from Germany. Also, they were intending on spreading communism worldwide - largely for ideological reasons (Cold War).

Many historians view the Yalta and Potsdam Conferences as the start of the Cold War since they highlighted the growing mistrust and tensions between Truman of the United States and Stalin of the Soviet Union.
The purpose of the Yalta conference was to decide what to do with Germany once it had been defeated. The hope was that the 3 allied leaders (Franklin D. Roosevelt, Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin) could agree on how they would divide Europe after WW11. The purpose of Potsdam Conference was for the three Allied powers to begin discussing how to handle the defeat of Nazi Germany and how the world would carry on after the war.
These Conferences are now viewed as a major event in the Cold War as well, because it highlighted the divide between Stalin and the other two leaders. Also, Harry S. Truman (he replaced Roosevelt as president of U.S after Roosevelt died) made Stalin aware of the American atomic weapons program (Manhattan Project) & that the Americans had developed the world's first atomic bomb (Cause of the Cold War).

Canada was an important power in the Cold War. It was one of the founding members of NATO. NATO, which stands for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, was a military alliance formed in 1949 by nations opposed to the Soviet Union and its allies. NATO was established as a collective defense. The idea is that the member states pledge to defend one another from an attack from an external state. Basically, the idea is: strength in numbers.

Canada contributed significantly to war efforts by helping to stop the spread of communism and making strong military alliance. Canada’s armed forces were the most engaged, and active responsive armed forces within NATO. Canada’s priority in NATO was to ensure that all allies remain modern and are able to face the threats during the time period (Sullivan).
