Kindness and Helping Others

●National Kindness Movement

●Everyday acts of kindness (helping a classmate, giving up seat)

●Caring for others in school, home, or public

●Helping the Elderly

Question:

Reference: 1) What do you think the girl is doing in the picture? 2) Why is she doing it? 3) How do you think the elderly man is feeling?

Preference: 1) If you were the girl, would you choose to do what she was doing + why or why not? 2) Do you like interacting with the elderly + why/why not?

Experience: 1) Tell me about an elderly person in your life. 2) Have you ever interacted with an elderly person?

Inference: 1) Do you think it is important to interact with the elderly? Why or why not? 2) What should schools do to increase the interaction between children and the elderly? 3) What do you think are problems faced by the elderly + possible solutions?

My personal experience:

My grandmother, who is 90+ years old. Lived with her from birth until Primary 2.

Took care of me and spent most of my childhood holidays at her home, so she's very dear to me. Continue to visit her often even though she lives on the other end of the island. Bring her out for meals (but with great difficulty now with mobility issues) Talk to her about everything (e.g. ask questions about her childhood, tell her my problems, use her as the interchange of knowledge about my other relatives).

Has dementia since about 5 years ago, but she still remembers who I am, although she thinks I am only 20+ years old! Have to repeat a lot of things I have said, but have to learn to be patient. Focus is on making her happy!

Research/Facts:

Singapore is a rapidly ageing society, with almost 18% of the population above 65 years old. With increasing life expectancy, and declining birth rate, Singapore will become a super-aged society by 2026 (elderly greater than 21%). SG Government has put in place many new measures to help senior citizens age well, e.g. activities and programmes to connect more with others, and even learning programmes (e.g. AI, digital world). Elderly tend to be more at risk of scams and other digital world issues (e.g. computer virus), and it is important for society to help them. Extremely important for the elderly to maintain connection with the world and with others, both digitally and physically. Good for the brain (prevent or slow down dementia, prevent depression), for the body (improves health by participating in activities), and for society (to be seen as useful rather than a burden).

I could not even do the simplest task and felt extremely helpless. Luckily, I managed to recover quickly and could resume my daily activities after being in quarantine for 3 days. From that day on, I ensured that I had a healthy body, and went for vaccinations to keep my body healthy, away from viruses.

Research/Facts:

COVID-19 is a potentially severe viral infection that mostly affects your lungs and airways.

It's caused by a coronavirus.

The virus spreads very easily to other people.

Some infected people have no symptoms, but others get very sick, and some people die.

Swabs from your nose or throat are tested to diagnose COVID-19.

Racial harmony is crucial for a stable, prosperous, and cohesive society, particularly in diverse nations like Singapore. It's about respecting and celebrating differences, fostering understanding, and ensuring equal opportunities for all. Racial harmony prevents social conflict, promotes inclusivity, and allows diverse communities to thrive together.

I have once shown appreciation for my mother. It was Mother's Day and I was planning to bake a cake and make a card for her. I searched online for recipes and found one suitable for her. It was a recipe for a cake with less sugar. This was a suitable cake as my mother does not like to eat foods that are too sweet. After many attempts, I finally manage to bake a delicious cake. Then, I made a card using colorful stickers and pen and paper. On it, I wrote what I was grateful for, like cooking for me everyday. When I presented it to my mother and shouted happy Mother's Day, she was so shocked and glad. She thanked me profusely. I am glad that I managed show my appreciation to my mother.

The teachers planned this day to remind us about the Racial Riots in 1964. First, there was a performance held at the hall. We enjoyed the performance and learnt a lot about the different cultures. Next, we headed to the classroom, to do sand art. However, one group accidentally spilled the sand all over the floor and they immediately started cleaning up. Fortunately, they cleaned up in a short while. Lastly, there were different foods of different cultures sold at the canteen. The food was delicious.

Question: Have you or your friends ever taken part in a cleaning activity? Share your experience.

(Experience)

Answer: Yes, I have indeed taken part in a beach cleanup activity organized by my school. That day, my classmates, teachers and I took a school bus to Siloso Beach. We caught sight of many people surfing on the waves and people tanning on the sandy beach. Unfortunately, we saw quite a few trash items scattered across the area - plastic bags, glass bottles, and tissue paper. The teacher then passed us a trash bag and tongs to pick up the litter on the beach. At first, we were disgusted by the huge amount of waste lying around on the beach, and we were hesitant to begin because the sun's heat was sweltering and it burnt our skin. However, the teacher told us the benefits of cleaning up the beach and it gave us motivation. We started picking up the discarded items and placing them in the rubbish bags. After this meaningful event, as we surveyed the surroundings and we realized that the beach was sparkling clean and not a piece of trash could be seen. This taught me the importance of protecting the environment.

I can also see the whiteboard writing "Project Showcase" I think that this project is to showcase their creation, so I think they are feeling exuberant.

My personal experience:

I remember a time when my English teacher, Miss Chia, told my class that there will be a project showcase. After grouping up with my best friends, we started and completed a magnificent made-up-of-recyclable-materials cat. In conclusion, I think that if I were one of the students, I would too feel exuberant.

Preference: Do you think it is important to recycle? Why or why not?

A: I think it is important to recycle as it helps conserve natural resources like trees, water, and minerals by reducing the need to extract new raw materials from the Earth. Recycling also minimizes the amount of waste sent to landfills, which can pollute the environment. By reusing materials, recycling lessens energy consumption and reduces pollution, including greenhouse gas emissions.

My personal experience:

I remember once when I was going to throw a plastic bag into the trash bin, but my friend told me that I should throw it into the recycling bin instead, so I did. From that day onwards, I learnt about recycling and how to properly recycle.

Experience: Have you ever participated in an activity like this? What was the outcome?

A: Yes! I have participated in an activity like this before.

My personal experience:

One time, we had an activity where we had limited supplies as our teacher wanted us to know the importance of where these items came from. We only had a piece of paper, and a few popsicle sticks. We were supposed to make a sculpture. My group was confused at first, how could we make a stunning sculpture with these few items. However, we were determined and managed to make something. We made a garden, using the sticks for the trunks and paper for the plants and trees!

In the end, we won first place. We jumped with joy as we received our small prize. In conclusion, I learnt the hard work that are used to make these items, and will never waste them without a second thought again.

Inference: Why do you think that it is important to participate in activities that help us to improve our creativity?

A: Yes, it is of utmost importance to participate in these activities.

My personal experience:

I remember one time my art teacher gave us a small competition. We could draw anything we want, with no restrictions. The whole class was excited and thrilled. When we were done, we were allowed to walk around, seeing everyone's creative works.

It was beautiful, and I hope we can do it again.

Research/facts:

Doing these activites can help to improve our problem solving skills, so in the future, we can solve unsolved problems easier and faster!

Therefore, I think that it is important to participate in these activites as it helps to relieve our stress and help us develop our brain.

Additionally, children also spend a lot of time on their screens as the devices are very accessible. For example, with just a few taps, you can access the website that you want to go. Children will find this very easy and convenient, encouraging them to be on their screens for often. Moreover, in a long run, their eyesight will be affected with the constant watching of the devices. With them being more and more addicted, it can cause them to use devices even past their bedtime. Afterwards, they will only be able to use the devices in the dark. With the devices being the only thing that is emitting light, it will be very harmful to our eyes. However, despite these disadvantages of using devices, there are some advantages. For example, when we are sick, we can use the device to allow to learn the things that we missed at home and we can contact our friends to bring us the home work for the days that we missed. In a nut shell I believe that there are a few reasons why children spend too much time on their devices and I do not think that we should encourage these kind of behavior as it will harm our health but at the same time, devices can help us. When we use devices, we should have self-control and when doing work, we should not play games or watch videos and we should be on task

Facts: Technology's impact is pervasive, fundamentally altering how we live, work, and interact.

Key Question Prediction: How can technology affect our daily lives?

My Personal Experience: I feel like technology can affect both our personal and our school lives in both good and bad ways. For school, students can use artificial intelligence to help them improve with their school work. They can also use computers to research information for projects. It is more convenient to use computers to research information compared to flipping through countless books to find certain information. However, students that are undisciplined may use the devices for entertainment purposes in class. Such students may go to websites such as YouTube or Instagram. This will cause them to pay less attention in class, which results in a decrease in their grade. As such, the students will have less opportunities in the future to be successful. As for our personal lives, technology such as the internet allows us to share our troubles anonymously to other people. This will make us feel better. Apps such as WhatsApp also allows us to communicate with loved ones from other countries or friends from other schools. This will allow us to maintain a positive relationship with the people we love that we cannot see everyday day. However, posting to many things on social media might allow people to know where we live and they may try to break in. The internet also has many inappropriate things that may tempt children to do bad or illegal things. Both of these things pose a threat to children. As for me, I regularly use apps such as YouTube and WhatsApp to destress and talk to my friends and family.

I commemorating racial harmony before and it left a deep impression on me. I remembered vividly the teachers discussing the importance of commemorating racial harmony day to the class which taught us how the racial riot started and how to prevent this kind of things from happening again.Thereafter, we went to the hall from a performance and we learnt about different cultures and their heritage. Finally, during recess, there were variety of food from different races sold there which we savoured and appreciated. At the end of the day,I got a deeper understanding of racial harmony and realised that peace is not unity in similarity but unity in differences

I have participated in an activity like this.I remember vividly when my teachers wanted us to create something out of our creativity. We had only some paper rubber bands and ice cream sticks. We had to brainstorm for ideas and finally, we thought of a brilliant solution.we could make a puppet! In the end, the teahcer praised us and we won first place!Euphoria shot through us.

Through this experience, I learnt that Innovation and sustainability are not opposing goals. In fact, real innovation must include sustainable thinking.

Research/facts:

Since gaining independence in 1965, Singapore has conducted many national campaigns. These have covered a wide range of topics such as public cleanliness, family planning, courtesy, and workplace productivity. Other campaigns include ones that encourage people to be good neighbours, live a healthy lifestyle, and observe good personal hygiene. Collectively, the purpose of these campaigns was to instill certain social behaviours and attitudes regarded by the government as beneficial to both the individual and community. They are also used as instruments for policy implementation.

That day, I vividly remember that I took a big bucket and a pair of tongs and started picking up rubbish. I collected all sorts of rubbish. I was amazed at how inconsiderate the people were. While I was collecting rubbish, I also saw other people littering. That made me felt disappointed. Now, I could understand how hard it is to be a cleaner.

Research/facts:

Protects the ecosystems

reduces climate change.
