“I didn’t entirely like this glossy new surface, because it made that school like a museum, and that’s exactly what is was to me, and what I did not want it to be.”

This quote shows the reader about how the narrator views this new look to a jewel in his life. This building plays a significant role in the authors life and the memories that he will cherish forever were all in this place. A place of fond and dark memories. He talks about how he dislikes the look of it being a museum, a place which holds ancient memories. He seems to be uncomfortable with this and all his Experiences and memories that made him into the man is his today, has been seen as an artifact and this new glossy look shows the transition from wartime to a post war peace time and the old look has been replaced and has been lost, only alive in his memories.

It tells a story about a grave time of hopelessness to a time of peace and hope. The new varnish seems to symbolize the new look, a new school, a new era. The days before the war are seen as an ancient time and a time that almost seemed like a dream and now it has been lost to time, all those fond memories may be stored here forever but the author may not have wanted that because he may have wanted to let go of these memories.

2) “ Devon is somethimes considered one of the most beautiful school in New England :

The school/town:
"It made the school look like a museum, an thats exactly what it was to me, and what I did not want it to be."

Here, a simile is utilized to portray the cold, unfeeling atmosphere of the school to Gene. A museum is usually depicted as a factual place meant to inform members about its history and usually items in a museum are wothy of being there however in this case, gene doesnt prefer it this way due to the fact he doesnt want to remember and forget about his past however this is only engraining the past into his mind. It is clear that Gene is not comfortable with the new look of this school. This helps the reader empathise with Gene and understand his plight. It makes the reader understand the reason he seems to feel this way

The grounds of the building:
'Devon is sometimes considered the most beautiful school in New England, and even on this dismal afternoon its power was asserted.'

This is used to depict that though the atmosphere of Devon is abandoned and forlorn, the school still shows a sense of grandeur and luxury that must be remarked upon. This shows the reader the sheer splendour of the school, and that it deserves to be commented upon.
