This module is here to extend evaluate, analyse, and have a more in-depth look at how artists write, how they structure their lyrics, create case studies, and lean into how they operate as writers.

Explanation of required activity

Break down the structure of the songs that influence and inspire us and use the influence/Inspirations to create our sound by employing sound techniques, gear, and production settings.

Create a DAW track and a live performance using the templates and learned techniques.

Smart targets and goals

My main goals and targets for this module are as follows.

1. create a smooth transition between my chest voice and head voice without tension. This will be measured at the formative stage of the tracks. This is achievable in the time scale given and will require research.

2. Learn to effectively produce a track that is well-balanced and ready for mastering. This will show progress by the formative stage of the module and will show great improvement by the summative end date. This is achievable in the time scale but will require tuition and practice.

3. Learn how to effectively integrate my musical tastes i.e. the country rock pop style and show progress by the formative stage and be solid by the summative stage.

4 .Learn how to master a track this will show progress by the summative track and compare in all cases to previous versions of a mix and master

SWOT analysis explanation

Comparing my SWOT analysis from level 4 to level 5 has developed in the following ways.

my strengths in level 4, were my songwriting and good lyrical content, and in my opinion has got even better from level 5 because I can write a song quicker, get to the heart of the music and convey the emotion more.

Playing most instruments was seen as a strength on level 4. and that is still a strength, however as the songs have become more complicated I am starting to realise that, because drumming is not my first instrument I need more experience on the table to nail the complexities.

My singing is still a strength and I am improving the emotional aspect of the performance.

My guitar playing is still at a good standard and is improving in fluidity.

My production techniques from level 4 have improved and I know far more than I did in level 4 in terms of compression panning recording techniques and editing

My main weakness in level 4 was my academic writing and although I have got a better grasp of this, I am still struggling to get a really good grade. This is probably due to not realizing what needs to be in the essay fully and expanding on the question.

Another current weakness is the need to know how to effectively balance a track with its different parts and mix effectively to get the track ready for mastering.

video production is still a weakness of mine and needs further investigation, especially in the setting up and visual appearance.

On the last 2 tracks Producing a great vocal without tension on the upper register was mentioned and needs work but overall is good.

Mastering a track I feel is one of my weaknesses from level 4 and needs. thorough investigation.

My opportunities are similar to the last level i.e. having help with aspects, such as recording mixing and promoting a track ready for a performance or on a recording to sell and this has moved forward a little after an in-depth module on this subject. This has made me realise that I need to start moving in that direction.

Threats are always the same from levels 4 to 5 and that is the treat of time. Holding down a full-time job and doing the course is still proving difficult, however, I am keeping up with the workload

I am looking forward to this module and hope to improve both my performance and essay-writing skills.

This highlights all the potential risks that are present at the time of recording producing and playing live shows.If you know the potential risks , you can remove or minimise them.

Part b of the risk assessment using the formula severity against probability works out a score which then. can be reduced or removed and if it can't decisions have to be made as to whether the activity should take place or some other means of managing the risk .The risks are categorised as Low Medium and High.

I think research is finding out and gathering information and analysing information and breaking it down every aspect accurately .Learning from it so that it can be used for different purposes to inform.

This is necessary because without it we wouldn't be able learn from and use it for the purpose it is intended for. It would mean that the information out there may not be accurate and that the first piece of info that we came across we would take as gospel by researching different parts of the subject we can get to the heart of what the subject matter or subjects in question and develop arguments for and against to support that research.

We need this research for all the above reasons in our assessments to show that we have thoroughly carried this out.

Grammarly

This resource is named Grammarly, and it boasts that it can correct punctuation spelling, and grammar as I am typing it is underlining the text that it wants to change for me, which is fantastic, as I always struggle with all aspects of grammar. The tools also include a premium section that brainstorms ideas and re-writes them for you. I like this resource because you can correct it as you go.

Notion

I tried out the resource notion. From a research point of view, it was quite poor, and I couldn’t even find anything related to my question.

From a planning point of view, it is excellent, and you can organize your work and bring in different links to support your work. The function has a calendar so you can also look at specific dates.

Google Bard/gemini

Google Bard is an AI tool that generates answers to questions.

I tried this resource using the same. Search “Can you tell me the guitar that Paul McCartney used on the recording of Rocky Racoon”.

The search brought back that it was an acoustic guitar but no specifics. I would use this as a general resource but not for specifics. This next module will need specifics and is very crucial to the search.

Open Art

Open art is a good resource that uses stock photos and helps you edit them. The problem is that you need to upgrade to find out what it really can do, and the stock images don’t lead to a music environment.

Landar AI mastering

I have used this resource before on one of my tracks as a trial and it seems to be very good, even though at first the difference seems very subtle. The AI analyses the sounds and then a master’s them by using compression volume and panning techniques by using a logarithm.

I would use this on my private tracks if I wasn’t doing this course, as I think that it is too AI, not allowed, and in most modules, we must mix the track ourselves.

Sonoteller

I have looked into the above resource, and I find it excellent how it analysis the song and breaks it down into genre sub, genre mood, and gives a brief disruption of what the story is about and what the main focus if of the story. This resource also albeit not in a detailed way gives the instruments used.

I was also putting down an acoustic and clean guitar for Lovin , I also introduced a tremolo guitar to Lovin to give it that country feel . All went well and fit in with the song nicely .The tremolo was in time with the song and captured the essence of the country spirit .The tremolo guitar has been used extensively on country tracks such as ( Farina J,S 1959 ).I need to start looking at vocal techniques of how to sing without tension and also recording techniques of how to mx and master for the upcoming week. (Zulfi, O. (2023)The rehearsal of the the songs is coming on nicely , however I am struggling to remember the lyrics to the song Lovin , probably because of the rhythm of the song. The method that I usually use is to repeat every line several times until it sticks. For now I am using the words to get the flow and by the time the formative session is ready to record I will have it down.

The technicalities of the video recording has been ironed out and I use a program called wonder share , which marries up the video to the sound very efficiently. On my PDP I needed to start working on my essay writing skills as a constant ,as one of my attempts last block was disappointing, this is going well with SG and I am starting to make sense of it all by using a question method to eek out the answers.I am going to do this by constant practice of questions as well as a weekly tutorial with my mentor and then by the end of the module I should have a firm grasp of concepts and better writing skills

both drum patterns went well and followed the given format of the song .The parts seemed to be very tricky and on the song Lovin the inspiration came from a song by Bruce Springsteen entitled streets of (BruceSpringsteenVEVO, 2009)Philadelphia ,but speeded up. I feel going forward there may be some changes later depending on how things sound and shape up .This can be done by making the drum parts more solid on the kick drum to give it more emphasis and maybe some more fills but as it stands they are both pretty solid.

I am at the moment researching into my Influences and the ones that inspire and influence me. finding out the attributes and the breakdown of the track, then integrate them into my songs, they are are Give a little bit by super Tramp and breakfast in America. The chord structures this time are simplified in the sense they are mainly diatonic The letter being in the key of D Lovin being in C with a FMA7 toward the end of the chorus to give it a different sound before going back into verse.

I think the concepts of both these songs are worthwhile subjects and are worth developing. Structures may change in the future weeks , but I have the basis of what I hope will be 2 good songs.Week by week I will work on any lyrical changes if it does not fit the music and phrasing perfectly.

The vocal part went well as a try out for the vocals ,but I feel that I haven't quite not there yet .I still need to release the tension on my top notes which I have started practicing a while ago with a method by (Ramsey 2020)about tension and this is helping but I feel it may be a long way before I am fully there. The rehearsal of the song Lovin is going well and I am getting to know my own lyrics ok. Even though have written these lyrics I still need to go over them to make the performance flow .This will be done by repetition ,repetition, repetition until it is flawless before the hand in of the final piece.

I have done a few run throughs with the camera to make sure it is a clear picture and there is no latency. This is working well and in the future I am thinking of buying the full program of wonder share to get away from the watermark and make things smoother and get the full package with different effects.

The things that set me apart from others is the versatility of the music genes and also the harmonies which are applied to either a cover or original in a unique way.

• Most competitors in our field of work i.e the clubs don't have many artists that play both an instrument and harmonise.

• We offer a great service that does not compromise on quality and delivers a great performance as standard each time across many genres.

• The USP is centred around creating catchy melodies, choruses in our own work and making the cover versions our own by applying harmonies to areas of the song that aren't necessarily on the original recording

• We use the above to draw our audiences listening experience b creating a warm friendly sometimes comedic night of entertainment.

The other aspect I have been working on is the dramatic guitar parts as in the song "Somebody where the song starts off with a distortion sound. I already had a riff at the beginning so I decided to put another guitar underneath to give it that effect and also the song didn't feel that it was finished, so another the riff was repeated at the end but scaled back with less instrumentation and finishes on a c6 chord to give it a definite ending. Similar to "Hard days night "by the Beatles and even though this was not in the original plan it resolves as in the opening chord of the above song. I feel both parts went well especially the ending, however the speed of my song against the speed of somebody, doesn't match up, and the intensity isn't the same. Because I am taking the idea form the song it fits quite well. In future I will look at tempo's that maybe will facilitate this intensity.

Looking at my original goals I have continued to practice with the four rules for singing high as in chapter 5 and I have cemented a routine for this. This is now becoming slightly easier.

I am continually working on producing and learning from my mentor, one aspect I have been working on recently is the fade tool on each part of the track, when a part is played in different sections, i.e. not recorded at the same time, there is an edge which sometimes produces a click. This needs smoothing out, and can be done by using the above tool.

From a research point of looking at weekly classes I have had a more better insight about research i.e surface research and deeper research and also the importance of finding more that one resource. Doing the case studies, have proved very difficult for me as there was a lot of work to do .I am starting to understand the complexity of looking at an essay question and following the brief, and by only doing this it saves on irrelevant wording

Aesthetic

The Aesthetic of our duo Soul Provider, Weird Science and Saw and Wylde captures various outfits to fit the image for example the soul part and the 80’s version of ourselves relies with the stereotypical clothing of the genre, whereas the Shaw and Wylde version that relies completely on original material is a across section between country ,rock blues ballad the music with a dress sense based around the country theme, but not strictly to that  genre of music, one of the members wears a blue wig and both wear tops that are synonymous with other genres such as rock. The footwear in one member is sparkly pumps as from the disco era and the portrayal of the band is based around emotional connection in the ballad sense and a connection of warmth and fun to the audience.

I have also worked on a four part harmony for the intro and choruses in the song Loving.The riff I feel still needs some work because it doesn't really fit the song interns of question and answer techniques like in the above song.I will have to listen to the song above many times to find the best place for them .In the original song most of the riffs go in the bridge sectioned as (Ellul 2019)mentions"Four-part harmony is a traditional system of organising chords for 4 voices: soprano, alto, tenor and bass (known together as SATB)"Using this idea, method and my own knowledge I was able to create a four part harmony.i want to ,before the hand-in bring 2 female harmonies in to give a different dimension to the song.The parts did go well and fit together ok.I will have to check them separately and together ,to make sure.I think if I was doing this sort of thing again I would multi layer each part to give added depth, but for now I feel the parts fit the song providing I don't make them too predictable.

I am feeling anxious about the summative, because I want it to be really good and better than the previous summative attempts.

The 4 part harmony allows me to get the timing right.I think in the future the only thing that will help an anxious performer like my self is repetitions it is second nature.

The song itself is going well and most of the parts apart from the vocals is mixed and ready to go.Using different plugins really make that difference although sometimes I feel I just want to simplify and strip back things too make it less complicated, and in the future I will try and work on the stripped back sound that I think I need.

It has been apparent from the start ,that a lot of work is needed produce a track, and even though I am not on the producer path I still want to do a great job.

Also I have continued to hone my performance making sure all words are performed correctly and everything is in time.I think I have a tendency sometimes to get anxious and not perform on the day to the best of my ability, but with regular practice this should not be an issue when I do the final recording and mixing.The vocal warm ups have helped to warm me up before I start

In the future I still need work on my vocal performance, and make it even better than this time.
