The short sentences in the dialogue show the short attention span of a child. The dialogue is short and snappy, and ends quickly: for example, “‘There.’ ‘Give us one.’” This shows the impulsive nature of dialogue with children, mimicking their voice.
When Doyle uses longer sentences, the language remains simplistic. For example “Henno brought [...] own house.” In this sentence, Doyle uses a lot of simple words like “and” and “then”, reflecting the small size of children’s vocabulary. Furthermore, the use of “ma”, and “da” are specific examples of the immaturity of the narrator because an adult wouldn’t refer to parents as “da”, or “ma” but mother and father. This conveys the effect of a child through the use of a simple sentence structure. The use of a noun phrase shows the basic language used by a child. The verb 'chased' shows the fast pace of a child's mind and their creativity. The short, dramatic sentence shows a child's tendency to overexaggerate  and dramatise a situation.
